Spencer Long hopes to be a contributor on both the football and track teams at Princeton University beginning this fall. Colorado Track XC file photo.

Spencer Long's best marks:

110 meter hurdles - 14.66

300 meter hurdles - 38.95

Coach Faulkner tells me that you'll be doing both football and track at Princeton. We know you specialize with hurdles in track, but what position are you expected to play for Princeton football?

Wide receiver and returner on special teams.

Colleges often aren't very warm to the idea of multi-sport athletes. How were you able to convince the staff there you really wanted to do both football and track?

Football at Princeton is pretty accepting to athletes participating in track because it is good cross-training, and track was willing to work with football and recruit me as a hurdler.

What sold you on Princeton as the place for you to be?

The fact that it is the best school in the Ivy League for both sports, and my experience on the visits I had.

Do you have a preference between the 110 hurdles and the 300s--or 400 when you get to college?

I would prefer the 110s because they are more enjoyable to run.

What's been the most satisfying experience for you of your high school career to date?

Sweeping all of the Fort Collins teams in football this year.

Do you have any goals firmly in place for the rest of this track season?

Win state in both hurdle events.

**********

5A already has three 300 hurdlers with times under 40 seconds this season, so for Spencer Long to achieve his goals for this season means, among other things, staring down a major showdown late on the third day of the state meet. That should make for a very good event to watch.
