Adding an Image or Document to the Forum or to a Meet Page

Everything you ever wanted to know about MileSplit site functionality!

You may have never thought of adding in image to a forum discussion or meet page, but it is possible to do.

Note: This article, and all other articles in the series assume a couple of things. They assume that you have established a username (registered) on the system and that you are logged in. If you haven't done that yet, go ahead and do it now. In addition, many of the functionalities assume that you are a MileSplit subscriber If you are not an Insider subscriber, you can become one here.

Adding an image to a meet page or to the forum never requires MileSplit Pro status. To add an image to a meet page, however, does require team admin/coach status for the host school. If you're a track or cross country coach in Colorado, you probably already have it.

We'll start with what's common to both procedures--getting an image from your computer into your file storage under your username on MileSplit.

You must first be logged in. Once you are, click on the Account icon in the top right corner of any MileSplit page. The takes you to your user profile page. On the right end of the gray navigation bar, you will find a My Files link. Click there.

This will bring you a place where you can upload files. Simply click on the gray Upload File button, click Choose File on the dialog box that appears, find the file on your computer, and click on Upload. That will load the document or image into your file structure resident in the MileSplit system. This is necessary if you're going to add a document or image to a meet page (perhaps an entry form or a course map) or to a forum posting. Note that there is a 2 MB file size limits on uploads. If the file exceeds that size, the upload will abort.

But, you will need the new url for that file to make it appear on a meet page or in a forum thread, so click on the file in your listing of files and copy the url for the file that appears in the dialog box when you click on the filename.

To post that file to a meet page, bring up the meet page, click on the dark gray Meet Manager button that appears in the banner area meet page (this button will only appear if you are logged and and are a registered team admin/coach for the host school of the meet), and you will be taken to the meet admin page for that meet. Scroll down on the meet admin page and find the Additional Information text box in the bottom left corner of the meet page. If you wanted to add an entry form, you might type "Entry Form" in that text box, highlight what you just typed, click on the link icon (two links in a chain), and paste the url for the form in the dialog box that appears. If you wanted to add a course map, you might type "Course Map" above where the map will appear, press return to advance to the next line, and then click on the photo icon (immediately left of the link icon). Now, copy the url for your photo into the dialog box that appears. Next, return to the top of the meet admin page and click on the meet title at the top of the page. This will take you back to the regular home page for the meet and your document or photo will show under the Additional Information heading. It's that easy.

The process is essentially identical for adding a document or image to a forum posting. Copy the url for the image or document you want to link or have appear on your posting, click on the proper icon, and copy the url into the space provided.

Note: Please always check with your state webmaster before posting what could be construed as a free advertisement on a forum thread. In most cases, these will be summarily deleted if authorization has not been extended for such a posting. In many cases, your state webmaster may be willing to run a publicity article for an event instead of a forum posting, but you will need to check with him/her about that first.

It should also be noted here that linking documents to a thread or meet page, or adding photos to same, is a privilege that should be used judiciously. Indiscriminant posting of these items could lead to suspension of user privileges.
