This week in Track and Field...

There's no disguising what the big event is on this week's calendar!

Simply stated, the Simplot Games is the biggest high school indoor event west of the Mississippi (and maybe even west of the Appalachians).

Most of Colorado's high school talent still interested in one more taste of indoor competition will be making the trip to Pocatello this weekend. Action starts on Thursday evening and continues through Saturday afternoon.

The list of Colorado athletes competing is much too long to enumerate here. Suffice it to say it will be a large delegation headed to Idaho, and several make the trip with hopes of winning an event title. Heat sheets will be posted as they become available.

And that big dump of snow that's supposed to hit the Front Range this weekend? It looks as if it almost entirely misses Pocatello. Even Rock Springs and the I-80 route through Wyoming stay unscathed through Thursday--at least according to current forecast models.

Having spent the past weekend in Albuquerque covering Great Southwest Indoor, I'll be staying home for this one this weekend. I will, however, be checking in on the computer regularly and posting updates. Meet videos and photos will be going up all weekend long as they are readied for production.

If you're going, remember it's a wooden track, and the spikes and blocks don't come out until finals. The 60 meter hurdles prelims is the lone exception, where spikes are permitted in prelims. So, be sure to be shoes appropriate for racing without spikes for all prelims events. And, if you do advance to finals, you might as well know now that 3/16" needles are the only spikes allowed on the track for finals.

Regular spikes are allowed for both prelims and finals of jumping events.

With conference meets looming on the final weekend of February, the college scene is uncharacteristically quiet this weekend. Mines hosts the Joe Davies Open and Wyoming hosts the Rocky Mountain Classic, both on Saturday. Weather could possibly become an issue for travel to either of these meets.

Since the Joe Davies is an open meet, it's likely we see a few high schoolers showing up on the list of entries for that meet. Assuming that to be the case, we'll definitely be following those results and bringing you updates as they become available.
