January 22-24 in Colorado High School Track and Field

Sarah Yocum will be among the high schoolers to watch at Saturday's running of the CSM Twilight. This time, however, it will be under the colors of Real Training. Colorado Track XC file photo by Jeff McCoy.

It should be a busy weekend for high school track and field around the state, and a little bit outside of the state as well.

While the past weekend has almost everyone competing at the Martin Luther King Mile High, this weekend will be scattering the competitors to the four winds.

The Colorado School of Mines Twilight Open runs Friday and (mostly) Saturday. Though primarily a college meet, it's already clear there will be a decent representation of high school athletes on hand as well.

The Air Force Invitational also runs Friday and Saturday (and Thursday, if you include multis). It is not as transparently clear whether a few high school athletes might be competing there as well. If so, it will likely be only a very small number of top-tier athletes.

And, for southern Colorado types, the Duke City All-Comers runs Saturday evening following the UNM home meet at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Without fail, this series of Saturday night meets keeps the southern Colorado tracksters coming. At the moment, it's a short list a registered Colorado athletes, but registration stays open until late Friday night. Already, though, it is evident that there will be some solid competition on hand.

The bulk of the weekend's high school track and field action, however, figures to come on Sunday afternoon at the Tony Wells Memorial at the Cadet Field House. High school action is slated to begin at 12:30 PM for that one.

Coverage for the weekend? Well, there's quite a bit up in the air about that right now.

Suffice it to say Colorado Track XC will not be on hand for the Duke City All-Comers.

There is good possibility of some coverage of the CSM Twilight, the Air Force Invitational, or possibly a little of both. A multiplicity of factors come into play. The light is workable for photos at Steinhauer Field House, but the number of photos lost to crowded conditions in the field house is enormous. Several former TCA athletes should be competing at the Air Force Invitational, a factor which could keep me close to Colorado Springs depending on how the scheduling of their events goes.

The current plan is for Colorado Track XC to be on hand for coverage of high school events at the Tony Wells Memorial.

LATE EDIT: There will be no high school athletes at the Air Force Invitational.
