All That's Left of Track Season...

This is one article I research and write as much for my own benefit as anyone else's. It's a little difficult to keep track of all the summer meets. And, if anyone ever were to make a solid move toward consolidation of some of these summer meets, I just might be persuaded to kiss the feet of said person.

As best as I can tell, here is what is left of summer track and field that might, possibly, include Colorado entries of high school age:

Hershey Youth Outdoor Championships, June 28 - July 3 - To my knowledge, there are no Colorado high schoolers competing in this Pennsylvania-based meet, but there could be, so I hold out the possibility.

USATF Region 10 Junior Olympics, July 7 - 10 - This meet will be held in Albuquerque. Maybe the rainy season for ABQ will have begun by then and the Duke City won't be quite as hot as it has been all through the month of June. In any case, top four finishers in each event from the USATF-Colorado state meet qualify. If the rainy season hasn't begun by then, your best bet for relief from the heat might be to enter the steeplechase. My condolences if you don't have the qualifying mark.

IAAF U20 World Championships, July 20 - Katie Rainsberger will run the 3000 against international competition in Poland. She will be the only Colorado high schooler in the meet.

Rocky Mountain State Games, July 23 - You don't have to travel far for this one--it's centrally located along the Front Range at Lewis-Palmer High School. You do need an entry fee and a USATF membership to compete, though. It could also be Kelly Christensen's last visit to Monument for a while.

USATF Junior Olympics National Championships, July 25 - 31 - If you qualify out of the Region 10 meet in Albuquerque, your next and last stop for the season is the national championship meet in Sacramento.

AAU Junior Olympics National Championships, July 30 - August 6 - If a trip to Humble, Texas, in late July into early August sounds appealing to you, and if you qualified out of the AAU District 20 meet this past weekend (we're now down to a very small selection of Colorado high schoolers), you can compete at this national championship meet. Since AAU is a much bigger deal in some states than it is in Colorado, this meet does actually come close to rivaling the USATF version of Junior Olympics. It could well be that Arria Minor ends up competing here; she has certainly met the district qualifying standard.

Boulder Road Runners Summer Track Meets, July 7, July 21, August 4, and August 18 - These are held at Potts Field in Boulder. To find out more about these opportunities, click here.

State Fair Street Vault, September 3 - I do not yet have official word that this one is happening again this year, but I don't see why it wouldn't. The event seems to be gaining in popularity annually and is the de facto end of the pole vault season here in Colorado.

If I missed something, please let me know--always happy to update an article with better information.

Though not track and field in the strict sense, I will be following 4th of July road race results as closely as possible once again this year. It's a great weekend for the the distance set to get out and try out their legs a little. Any help in passing along 4th of July weekend road race results is greatly appreciated.
