Doing Your Own Virtual Meets for State (It's Easy!)

See here how to run virtual meets for the 2016 Colorado State Cross Country meet.

The teams qualifying for state have now been determined, and I have entered all state-qualifying teams into separate "leagues" for you so that you can easily access those teams as you build virtual meets. Because you would probably like to get an idea of how those teams might finish at state, right?

There are a couple of different methods. The first I'll show you here is simple, and the second is a bit more complex, but also more flexible. So, there are pros and cons to both. And, I need to tell you now that you need to be a MileSplit Pro member to have access to do virtual meets.

XC Team Scores

If you've been around for a while, you remember the XC Team Scores virtual meet. It was taken away for a while, but the clamor over that was such that it's been brought back. You can access XC Team Scores through Rankings/XC Team Scores or, if you prefer, simply by clicking here. The XC Team Scores tool defaults to all classifications and boys, but you can customize your virtual meet easily through the dashboard settings.

In our case, let's suppose we'd like to run a virtual meet of the 4A Girls teams that qualified for state. To do that, click on Girls in the upper left of the dashboard. This changes the view to all classifications of girls.

Now, click on the League dropbox and scroll down until you find the State Meet Teams group. These "leagues" have just been updated to include the teams that qualified for State. Select State XC Teams - Girls 4A, then click on Refine. You now have a virtual meet for the 4A Girls teams that qualified for State.

Virtual Meets

The new Virtual Meets tool under Rankings is a souped-up version of the old Virtual Meets tool. But, one of the costs of extra flexibility is extra steps to get through to get exactly what you're after. I'll take you here through a very simple virtual meet for the 3A Boys teams qualifying for state.

Start with clicking Rankings/Virtual Meets. Then click on Build From Scratch

This takes you to your first set of options. Since we're doing boys this time, we can leave Level at HS Boys. The only dashboard setting we need to change this time is the League setting. Just like we did with XC Team Scores, above, we want to click on the League box, scroll down to the State Meet Teams group, and select State XC Teams - Boys 3A. Then click on Next.

The calculation takes a second or two, but what you see is a virtual meet of all state-qualifying 3A Boys teams. There are two tabs, one for individual scoring and one for team scoring. To the side are settings to change the number of scorers and displacers, but we want to leave these set on 5 and 2 for 3A Boys.

If there are athletes you know won't be competing in the state meet, you can click on the X at the end of the line with their name and the whole meet scoring recalculates to adjust to the removal of that athlete.

If you know an athlete has a time from a particularly "fast" meet and you want to dial back that time a little for that athlete, you can click on the time shown in the virtual meet and enter a new time in the edit box that comes up. Once you do that, the entire meet scoring recalculates.

You can continue modifying your virtual meet in this fashion indefinitely. At any point, you may click on the Team tab to see how the team scoring is adjusting to your changes.

This could be addictive, so make sure your homework is done before you start this.

(And please let me know if you find errors in the lists of teams making it to state. It's a bit of a tedious process adding those teams, so mistakes are relatively easy to make.)
