2016 Demon 2 Mile: Imitation Is the Sincerest Form of Flattery

Evidently slightly piqued that the Tomahawk 2 Mile involves just a bit too much travel for his cross country charges, Durango coach David McMillan did the next best thing--he started his own two mile event as a preparatory trial for runners making the trip to Nike Cross Southwest.

Last night, on the newly-resurfaced Durango track, about 20 athletes battled it out over 3200 meters to help keep things sharp heading into next weekend.

Colorado Track XC 4A Girls All-State second team selection Madeleine Burns took the girls race and was the only finisher under 12 minutes with an 11:56.2. Bekah Moenning, Delaney Khung, and Abby Scott managed to avoid getting lapped by the speedy Burns.

The boys race was a bit closer. Durango's Harry Steinberg and Pagosa's Jacob Hughes battled pretty much wire-to-wire, with Steinberg eventually taking the win, 10:04.2 to 10:07.0.

Who knows? Perhaps this becomes a tradition? Although, if the event is to grow in numbers beyond the Durango, Mancos, and Pagosa Springs representation seen this year, the most fertile fields lie to the south in the Farmington, New Mexico, area (Shoulda invited Kashon Harrison, Coach Mac!).
