Two Important CHSAA Meetings Coming Up

A lot of behind-the-scenes work at CHSAA goes into the sports we enjoy each spring and fall.

For those interested in what cross country and track and field will look like in the next couple of years, there are a couple of very important meetings coming up on the CHSAA calendar.

On Thursday, January 26, the CHSAA Legislative Council convenes, as it does each January, to consider proposals and committee reports. This is the Legislative Council committee meeting that considers the cross country committee report from November.

If you take a mental journey back to November, you will recall that the cross country committee voted overwhelmingly to make 2A cross country a run 6/score 4 affair for next year. This would replace the current run 6/score 3 format. Also, the committee voted to enact requirements for minimum numbers of officials at cross country meets (up to nine teams, one official; 10 - 19 teams, two officials; 20 - 29 teams, three officials; 30 or more teams, four officials). Regional meets would be required to have four officials.

The Legislative Council will consider each of these proposals as part of the overall cross country committee report.

Also coming before the Legislative Council is a separate proposal that could impact cross country tangentially. There is a proposal to open a 2A classification in boys soccer. Potentially, this could result in more 2A schools taking on a boys soccer program which, in turn, might impact cross country numbers in the fall. All that, of course, is speculative, but the potential is there. And, even if it does end up costing cross country a few people, it's a little shallow turn begrudging over the growth of another sport.

We will know sometime later in the day on January 26 about the outcome of these proposals.

Then, on Friday, February 3, the CHSAA track and field committee convenes at the CHSAA headquarters building in Aurora for its annual meeting. Coaches who wish to have input on decisions pertinent to track and field are invited to attend.

Out of the track and field committee meeting will come a track and field committee report that will be considered at the April Legislative Council meeting. It's difficult to project what the content of that committee report will be, but Colorado Track XC will report on the proceedings of the track and field committee meeting for you if you are unable to attend.
