Learning from Controversy: A Glance in the Rear-View Mirror

Liberty Bell provided the first controversy to stir the pot a little here at Colorado Track XC. What might we learn from the controversies we've seen over these last several years?

This is now year ten of Colorado Track XC. I was a lot younger when I started doing this. And a bit more naive about a few things.

I have to admit, though, that I still have a lot of fun (most of the time) doing this.

One sure source of mixing a little angst with the fun, though, is controversy. I'd never make it at a web site that stirs contoversy 24/7/365. The stress would fry me in a hurry.

A little controversy is healthy and stimulates clear thinking. A lot of controversy mostly just stimulates what we see in the current political climate--a lot of unnecessary polarization. At the end of the day, it's still important to get along with people you don't necessarily agree with on certain points.

I am writing a review here of prominent past controversies visited here at Colorado Track XC mostly as an opportunity to learn something from the past, but partly for its cathartic value as well. It's nice to know these controversies are past us, that we can move past the things that divide us and reunite over the things we hold in common. And I will plant a flag on the hill of this being a worthwhile exercise.

Some will choose to stop here and not revisit the controversies. That's fine. Others, I believe, will find some reason for hope--as I have--in taking note of the controversies that have mostly fallen behind us. Just as there is much to be learned in study of the issues surrounding our own Civil War, there is much to be learned in the study of the lesser conflicts that have visited the Colorado high school track and field/cross country community.

Despite editorial considerations that urge me to put photos on each of the pages that follow, I've chosen not to do that. I fear, just a little, that for a few the photos might bring the memories back perhaps too vividly. It's not my point here to sensationalize anything where hurts of the not-too-distant past involved.
