What Did It Take To Advance to State Last Year? 3A

All four 3A girls shown at the front of Saturday's Banana Belt Classic 1600 ran well under last year's minimum state-qualifying time for the 1600.

As you try to figure out what it will take to get to State this year, one of your best reference points is what it took to get to State last year.

Even so, you want to understand the limitations of basing your prediction solely on what it took last year. Here are a few reasons getting to State this year could be different than getting to State last year:

  • Random variation from year to year. Some events get tougher one year to the next. Some events get easier. And some events stay about the same.
  • As things are shaping up now, weather is warmer earlier this spring than last. At least in the near term, that will tend to produce better performances. How that plays out in the longer view of the season makes for an interesting conversation.
  • 3A has several new teams down from last year's 4A ranks this season. And, 3A lost only a few teams on the lower end to the 2A ranks. The net upshot of the classification shift is likely that it will be more difficult, overall, to advance to State this year in 3A than it was last year

But, it's still a decent starting point to know what it took to get to State last year. So, listed below are the minimum state-qualifying marks for boys in each event. Then, if you click on Next, you can see what the minimum state-qualifying marks were for the girls.
