2017 Centennial Invite: Cookin' In The Dutch Oven

Top Performances of the Meet (3): Erika Willis Begins Dismantling Records

Three years ago, Andrea Willis set the 3A Girls Pole Vault standard at the end of her first season of pole vaulting with an 11-6 clearance at the state meet.

That mark stood unthreatened as the 3A standard for the next two years. As of yesterday, however, it's now the #2 AT 3A Girls mark.

After winning the meet with a clearance at 11-0, the usual progression of bars took Erika Willis to 12-0, where things seemed to stall out for the TCA junior. Willis missed on her first two attempts, but then regathered her composure to execute a nice clearance on the third attempt.

With momentum back riding the pole with her, Willis raised the bar to 12-4, then to 12-7, and cleared both with ease.

By this time, Willis's personal record and the Centennial Invitational record also laid gathering dust in the barrow pit.

Willis next raised the bar to 13-0, but 13 wasn't a lucky number on Saturday. Willis will have to wait to take other whacks at that bar later in the season.
