Coming This Week In Track And Field

To be honest with you, a lot of what's coming this week in track and field depends on what's coming in rain, snow, wind, and cold. We may get a lot of meets in, or we may not.

There are big meets and small meets coming this week. From meets as consequential as the Stutler Bowl Twilight and Liberty Bell to meets that will be hard-pressed to draw as many as ten teams.

One person you probably don't want to be this week is John Reyes. Coach Reyes gets to host on Monday at the Stutler Bowl, then again on Saturday at Legacy Stadium. He's already rescheduled the Monday meet; the Saturday meet could end up as a reschedule as well.

And, of course, Liberty Bell is squarely under the weather bulls-eye right now. Take your pick--neither Friday nor Saturday looks very good at the moment (unless you're a tree that hasn't leafed out yet).

One major difficulty with weather issues at this point in the season is the enhanced difficulty of rescheduling. When you look at rescheduling this time of year, you're up against proms, soccer playoffs, league meets, and every other manner of difficulty imaginable. And if, for example, Liberty Bell goes to a Monday/Tuesday schedule next week (I have no idea if they're even considering such a thing), that has a monumental ripple effect for meets throughout the rest of the week.

Moreover, coaches must consider the toll on athletes if rescheduling puts a team competing at big meets twice in the span of four or five days. 

You can bet that some coaches are already looking at the weather forecast and wondering if they can still get their teams in at the Central Warrior Invitational on Saturday. This won't be the warmest April Saturday on record in Grand Junction, but it does look a fair piece better than what the Front Range is offering in terms of weather. And, if you do enter the Central Warrior, how does I-70 look for travel on Friday or Saturday? Here's a quick glimpse at the answer to that question.

This much we do know. The Holy War has already packed its bags and moved to Wednesday. At the moment, that's looking like a great choice. 

See below for notes on other meets coming up this week. Tentatively, Colorado Track XC has some level or other of coverage scheduled for Stutler Twilight, Liberty Bell, Coronado, and Ram Charger this week. We'll see what comes of those plans.

Liberty Bell Invitational

This is not the dominant meet on the schedule that it once was, but it is still a giant of a meet on the Colorado landscape. It's almost unthinkable to cancel the Liberty Bell, and any move they might make is bound to create issues for other meets. As usual, there is a lot of teams pointed at this meet this weekend. Everyone holds their breath when this one has to reschedule, so we'll hope it doesn't.

Coronado faced a similar weather problem last year and went to the next Monday with a reduced set of teams. Something similar could happen again this year. Rain turns to snow sooner in Colorado Springs than any other major Front Range city.

High Altitude Challenge

It's not so much that the Saturday weather forecast for Alamosa is great, but folks in the San Luis Valley tend to have lesser expectations for high temperatures in April than most of the rest of us. The rain in the forecast is likely a bigger deal than the cool temperatures. My hunch is that they all throw on an extra layer and get this one in.

Cardinal Classic

Nobody is ever going to mistake Elizabeth for the banana belt of the Front Range. I'd hazard a guess this one is more in danger than any other Saturday meet east of the Continental Divide. Elizabeth--a very nice little community, but very much a center of adverse weather.

Vista Ridge Classic

Vista Ridge is one of the highest elevation tracks up and down the Front Range. And, honestly, there isn't much between this track and the cold north wind.
