Mount Vernon (IA) High senior Tristan Wirfs became the first athlete in 25 years to sweep the high school boys throwing events at the Drake Relays on Thursday and Friday.
On Thursday, Wirfs, a University of Iowa signee in football, earned the shot put title with a toss of US No. 6 mark of 66 feet, 3.50 inches. That came after he entered ranked second behind Kingsley-Pierson (IA) High's Nick Phelps.
Wirfs followed the next day , in rainy weather, to win the discus in a US No. 30 mark. He entered the competition ranked sixth in Iowa with a season-best of 175-5. But he threw a huge personal best of 190-1, far exceeding Phelps, who threw 176-7.
Wirfs now will be eyeing up his second straight Class 4A state title in the shot put and third consecutive title in discus. His throw in the shot put is over 6-feet farther than his throw to win state last year, while his throw in the discus is nearly 5-feet farther than last year's win.
