Colorado Springs Striders Take Their Turn At Hosting

You've heard about several of the Denver Lightning sprinters already. Keirryse Simpson may be next on the list of ones you want to be paying attention to.

For those who have never before been to the Grace Center, the unobstructed view of Pikes Peak from the track can be a little breathtaking.

At a track meet, though, you hope the view isn't the only thing that's breathtaking. And, in this case, it wasn't.

Donovan Williams showed up. And, as if the demonstrate that the state-sanctioned season was no fluke, Williams won the 100 in 10.75 and the 200 in 21.77. Sunday Abarca was there for the 200, but even Abarca in his Apsen House of Speed singlet could not keep pace.

The 17-18 boys 110 meter hurdles lived up to expectations, with Marcus Howard winning in 14.77 (wind legal), followed by Zaire Jackson, Andrew Doctor, D'mtrius Brooks, Eli Grant, and Ian Gray all under 15.6. There were only two PRs (wind-legal) in that set, but the hurdlers have stayed sharp deeper into the summer than most other event disciplines.

Grant and Jackson came back later in the day to dominate the long jump proceedings.

Charles Broomfield had the best shot put of the day, but Kain Medrano scored discus honors once again. He's made a habit of that in the summer meets.

Claudia Valenzuela, who's been working the long road back from an injury, won the 17-18 200 with her first sub-26 in more than a year. Speaking of 200s, Keirryse Simpson won the 15-16 boys race with a 23.06. Simpson was only a freshman this spring, but he's getting harder to ignore with each outing.

Carson Ebersbach showed some serious potential for upcoming seasons with a winning 51.49 effort in the 15-16 400. Ebersbach has been posting a whole lot of first places in that event this summer.

Kiana Jackson showed she still has the triple jump rhythm, winning that event in a wind-aided 37-1.75.

Under the assumption, I suppose, that everyone who still really wants to be running track on the USATF club scene will be in Arizona next weekend, there is no club meet here in Colorado next weekend. That leaves the Macktrack Elite meet on July 15 as the lone remaining full club meet of the summer here in Colorado. That one's at the Adams 12 North Stadium at Mountain Range High School.
