At The School Of Hard Throws...

Coach Krich guides a student through his favorite event, the javelin.

For the past two days, eight throwers from Colorado and Wyoming gathered at the throws venue at Discovery Canyon High School. The point was simple: become better throwers.

Three of those eight hung around for Saturday's throws pentathlon competition. A few of the others competed Saturday at the Rocky Mountain State Games, taking what they learned there instead.

Nine hours of instruction time and another couple hours of competition time were invested toward that goal, all under the guidance of local throws coach Matt Krich, who also heads up the Let It Fly Track (LIFT) club.

"With each athlete my goal was to work in the skills they already had and help to improve those skills," offered Coach Krich. "With many, it was the first time they had done a particular event, so I wanted them to learn the basics and have the enjoyment of learning a new event that they would want to continue and learn more about."

Coach Krich plans to bring the Throwers Pentathlon back next year, but likely at an earlier date so that those who come can apply the sharpened and newfound skills in summer competitions such at Great Southwest and the USATF-Colorado Junior Olympic Championships.
