Valerie Welch Shines in CU Record-Breaking 4x400

Iowa City West alum Valerie Welch is already having an excellent start to her collegiate career with the Colorado Buffs. This past weekend she was a member of a CU record-breaking 4x400 team and placed in the top 3 in the 60-meter hurdles at her home meet in Boulder. The relay team, made up of

senior Rajon O'Quinn, sophomore Eriana Henderson, junior Gabby Scott, and freshman Welch clocked a time of 3:43.13.

Welch personally split a 55.21, which is a lifetime best for the true freshman. Her 60-meter hurdles time of 8.67 was only 7/100ths of a second off of her lifetime best of 8.60, which she ran back in December at the CSU Alumni Open to take the W. This comes after only breaking the 9-second mark once during her prep career as a Trojan, running 8.99 at the A D Dickinson Relays last March.

Earlier this season, Welch also competed in the Long Jump at the Air Force Invitational where she placed 7th overall with a jump of 18-8.75. As a true freshman, Welch is certainly making great improvements and will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.
