Records Fall At St. Vrain As State Looms Days Away

Madison Mooney ran clear of the field for a state-leading 2:10.19 win in the 800.

Like the boys, there were a lot of highlights on the girl's side of the competition.

Michael Mooney wasn't the only one in his house who capped the night with a state-leading performance. Twin sister, Madison Mooney, blitzed the 800 field and made no contest of the race. The Broomfield senior led from the start, cruising through the first 200 meters in 32 seconds. She maintained her tempo throughout the next 400 and kicked hard down the final stretch, winning in a personal best. Mooney made a statement with her 2:10.19 win, which moved her back in to the No. 1 spot heading into state.

The 1,600 was another insanely huge race, as 18 runners broke 5:15, led by Katelyn Mitchem came agonizingly close to a sub 5. Mitchem won the race in 5:01. Five girls ran 5:03 or faster, including Lizzy Harding and Naomi Harding, who ran 5:02.31, and 5:02.34, and Taylor Whitfield and Tatum Miller, who ran 5:02.68 and 5:03.29.

Dawnielle Lewis and Maya Evans went 12.02 and 12.05 in the 100.

In the sprints Destiny Grimes moved up in the 100 hurdle rankings. Grimes ran 14.66 for a No. 2 in 4A mark. Another highlight came in the 100, where  and Dawnielle Lewis and Maya Evans took it to the line. Lewis took the race with a lean, beating Evans 12.02-12.05.

Evans had a big day of her own, however, winning the 200 in 24.29 over Mary Gillett's 24.38. Evans proved she's rounding into form right in time for state, as she went over 20 feet in the long jump for the first time this season. Evans won the event with a jump of 20-8.5 - that's the No. 1 mark in the country. In the pole vault the bar topped out at 12-3, where
Hayley Rayburn took the event, leading six over 10-9.
In the relays, Lutheran highlighted the Sprint Medlay Relay with a 1:49.80 win, while Gillett and the Niwot 4x400 team broke the 4A state record by a second, winning the event in a state-leading 3:49.65.
