Sprout, McConnell Reign In The Desert

Cole Sprout ran a nation-leading 14:32 to win at Desert Twilight.

14:32.9

That's not a two-mile time, or a 4k. That's currently the fastest 5k in the nation, and it belongs to Valor Christian's Cole Sprout

Sprout was the runaway winner Friday night at Desert Twilight, flipping the script on last year's kick-to-the-finish.

And he wasn't the only Colorado runner to break 15.

Niwot's Cruz Culpepper and Ares Reading dipped under the mark. Culpepper ran 14:44 to finish second in the No. 2 time in the country, while teammate Reading ran 14:52.9 to finish sixth in the No. 8 time in the country.

To reiterate: Colorado currently has the top two runners in the country. And they're both juniors.

And three of the top eight...

And two of them go to the same school...

Outside the fire from the front, there were a load of revealing performances coming from the pack, and from a few other races.

Side note: this is the first take of the meet, I'll be diving more into it in coming days...

Of the many storylines coming out the meet - and there were many, we saw the reemergence of Air Academy's Cal Banta, who has been laying low so far this season. Banta showed up in Arizona, however, running 15:31 to finish 11th in the Sweepstakes Race.

The 2-6 punch from Niwot's Culpepper and Reading nearly was enough to give them the team victory. And when I write nearly, I mean nearly

El Paso Eastwood took the team title by one point over Niwot. One point. The tally read El Paso Eastwood 112, Niwot 113.

Regardless of their runner-up finish, they proved their ranking once again with a team average of 15:30.

Behind them Durango took the No. 3 spot with 167 points, while Air Academy was finished fourth with 191 points.
