Colorado Track XC 4A State Athletes of the Meet

It was a stellar year for hurdles--and nowhere more so than in the 4A classfication--and so it seems fitting that Trevor Brown and Kita Alvares finished it with spectacular state meets. Photos by Alan Versaw.

Among 4A girls, there was absolutely no shortage of candidates for an athlete of the meet award. Do you go with Falcon's Kiah Hicks who swept both throwing events? Or with Kadeshia Rose who swept the 100 and 200 and applied a little heat to the first two places in the 400? Or with Samantha Kee who busted up a brand-new state meet record in the 400 into a stiff wind along the finish straight (and also finished second in both the 100 and 200)? Or Amy Medina who closed out an illustrious high school career with wins in the high jump and triple jump?

As exciting as those athletes' performances were, each will go down as very near misses for the 4A female athlete of the state meet. This year, that honor goes to Kita Alvares of Cheyenne Mountain. Alvares topped a simply loaded field in the 100 meter hurdles and tied a state meet record en route to winning the 300 hurdles.

For the boys, the winner was a little more clear-cut, not that there weren't other suitable candidates.

Trevor Brown simply destroyed the field in both the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. At least one of those outcomes was pretty much expected and the other didn't count as a huge surprise. What wasn't so much expected from Brown was a 45-2.5 in the triple jump, good enough for second in that event, and a leg of a 4x100 relay that propelled Wasson to third in that event. This year, Trevor Brown had no peers in the 4A state meet.

Although the high school careers for these two hurdlers are done, both are moving onto bigger stages. Trevor Brown has signed to run for Colorado State University. Kita Alvares has signed to run for St. Louis University.

Congratulations, Trevor and Kita, on your spectacular performances at the state meet. Individualized certificates will be mailed to your school in the next three weeks. If you prefer to have them mailed to a different address, please contact me offline or have your coach contact me offline with an alternate address.
