NXN At-Large Bids Skip Over Colorado

Although four Colorado teams were in the running, at some level, for NXN at-large bids, none of the bids fell our direction.

The NXN at-large bids just extended include:

GIRLS

New York - North Shore

California - Redondo Union

California - Simi Valley

Virginia - Midlothian

BOYS

Illinois - Palatine

California - Rancho Cucamonga

California - Golden Valley

New Jersey - Westfield

Easily the most surprising of these eight selections are Midlothian among the girls and Westfield among the boys. Apparently, the selection committee placed a very high premium on proximity of the #2 and #3 team scores at NXR meets to come to these two selections (presumably the final selections for each gender). Midlothian was three points out of second in the SE regional, and Westfield, despite being a substantial dark horse team coming in, was seven points out of second in the NE regional. Westfield arguably ran better than the #3 New York team competing on the same course on the same day as well, even though the New York boys were generally considered to be stronger and deeper than the NE boys going into the combined regional.

Presumably, Midlothian beat out Bozeman and Monarch in a bid for the final girls slot.

The season for the Fort Collins boys ended, for all intents and purposes, with a gap of roughly 100 points between them and second-place Davis at the NXR-SW meet.

Davis (2010, boys) remains the only SW team ever to receive an NXN at-large bid.
