Eaton's 4x100 qualified for state with a 43.95 last spring, one of four 3A teams to qualify with a sub-44. Colorado Track XC file photo.
State may seem like a long way away, and all the more so with snow in the forecast for this Saturday, but sometimes thinking ahead toward larger goals helps to put the little frustrations (and potential frustrations) along the way into perspective.
As athletes think about the season ahead, one question that runs through the minds of a lot of individuals is, "What will it take to make it to state?" The answer to that question, of course, varies a great deal by classification. And, while there's no way to project now exactly what it will take to make it to state this year, the first and best indicator is what it took to make it to state last year. That's what this series of articles is about. We'll break down those magical marks for each classification and gender over the next few days.
For those who like more detail with their analysis, I've broken down how many of the top nine seeds in each event made finals or placed and, with the pole vault and high jump, how many cleared opening height.
Be warned, however, that the qualification standards for state have been on a steady rise since the rankings system came into use here in Colorado. As a general rule, it gets a little tougher to make it to state every year. With that as a caveat, here's what it took to make it to state in 2012 for 3A boys:

200 Meters - 23.33 (9 of top 9 seeds advanced to finals)

800 Meters - 2:02.66 (7 of top 9 seeds placed)
