Hannah Ellis got a slow start to her season owing to an injury from spring, but she has things pointed solidly in the right direction with a dominating win at the Patriot League meet on Saturday.

It was a mixed week of league meets and invitationals. Hang on tight as we take you through the twists and turns of the week that was!

Windjammer Cross Country Invitational

Englewood HS XC Course Englewood, CO
Oct 7, 2017

The Windjammer drew its customary flood of teams. Despite the hard surface, this meet is always a solid draw, and always fast (which would likely have something to do with why it draws well).

Golden, a team that keeps looking better as the season goes deeper, beat a solid Green Mountain team, 34 - 108 for the girls team title. After Addi Iken got the win, there were a lot of black-and-red singlets going by in short order. Mary Fox and the sisters Goodrich got top-10 finishes, Harmony McMullin and Maggie O'Connell just missed. And this is a very young team that should be good for a while to come.

Mason Brown had something on his mind, apparently, and beat the boys field by over a minute with a 15:34 time. It was Overland with their best showing of the season that claimed the team title, though. Abdi Abade led the Trailblazer charge in second with a 16:37.

As a subset of this meet, they also settled the Colorado 7 League championship on the sidewalks of Englewood. Conifer was pretty tough on their fellow league denizens in that one. Fort Morgan took both seconds.

It was breezy in Bear Creek Park on Thursday, though not nearly as breezy as it would end up being for several of the weekend's Friday meets.

Delta Cross Country Invitational (Pantherfest)

Confluence Park Delta, CO
Oct 6, 2017

This was the warm-up act for the regional meets to be held in Delta in a couple of weeks. If the times seem fast, that would be because racing was conducted on the Delta Speedway (aka Confluence Park). A lot of girls earned first-ever sub-18 and sub-19 marks at this meet. A fast track and an amped up field of some already fast athletes will do that for you. So, just in case you thought Battle Mountain cross country was all about running up the sides of mountains and not very much about how fast you do it, the results of this meet are presented to help you disabuse yourself of that notion.

Joslin Blair logged her first win of the season, but Battle Mountain assured themselves of the team title with five of the next six places. Ivory Espinoza, who'd been a little starved for meaningful competition much of the season, got all she ever could have hoped for here.

The boys results weren't quite as remarkable this time around, but there are still highlights worth noting. Montrose couldn't hang onto the lead forged by a 1-2 finish by the brothers Graff. Eagle Valley, a much-too-lightly-regarded team in the 4A ranks cruised to the team title here. Aiden Branch got things started at 16:19, and Bailey Beckum would put the other bookend on the scoring at 17:13. Yes, it's a fast course, but that's also a nifty set of five times.

Tri Peaks League/Black Forest League Cross Country Championship

Monument Valley Park XC Course Colorado Springs, CO
Oct 6, 2017

Much as expected, Peyton rolled the BFL crowd in both the boys and girls division. Peyton took the top four places, and five of the top six, to win the boys title going away. Kate Griffin won the girls title, but the next four places all wore Peyton black and red.

Honestly, the Tri-Peaks part of the meet was a good deal more competitive.

Rachel Ingram took a somewhat surprising win over Hannah McReavy for the girls individual title. The league's team title, though, went the same place it has gone for several years--to Salida. Freshman Fern Clark was the Spartans' top finisher in fourth. That would suggest there's a new name in purple we need to get to know.

Lamar went 1-2 with Blake Davis and Wyatt Lehr in the TPL boys race, but Bean Minor in third had different ideas about where the team title should go. Salida did just manage to slip past Lamar for the team title, 35 to 38. Salida senior Griffin Ferguson likely enjoyed the high point of his cross country career when his 11th-place finish led to the Spartans clinching the team title.

Patriot League Cross Country Meet

Estes Park HS XC Course Estes Park, CO
Oct 7, 2017

The Patriot League went to Estes Park this year to settle things. I'm guessing if you dig back far enough, Estes Park has probably hosted a league meet before, but not in my memory.

Christian Fagerlin beat Andrew King to the finish for the boys title, but it was Jacob Doman in third who would lead his team to the team title. Score one for Liberty Common in this round, but don't be too anxious to dismiss Frontier Academy's chances in the weeks ahead.

Speaking of Frontier Academy, Hannah Ellis made certain nobody stayed in front of her for long and won the girls individual title. Samantha Angus finished fourth, and Frontier Academy was never seriously threatened. Whatever wasn't working right for the boys, whether by accident or design, had no impact on the girls.

Fountain-Fort Carson Cross Country Invitational

Fountain-Ft. Carson HS XC Course Fountain, CO
Oct 7, 2017

Lots of misfortunes struck this meet this year. Teams that had indicated an initial interest but later withdrawing. A change of date from the meet's usual place on the calendar. And so on.

As it ended up, four teams showed up and the home team dominated, well, pretty much everything. Loren Ruckmich and James Thomas claimed individual titles.

Chris Severy Invitational

Aspen HS XC Course Aspen, CO
Oct 7, 2017

Although many of us can recall Chris Severy meets that were much, much larger than this year's version, it was a small field that took the course at this year's race. Evidently, the Delta Speedway was a bigger draw than the slopes of Aspen mountainsides this year.

Telluride's Jaden Evans took top honors in the boys race. Ouray's Cooper Rondinelli was the only other finisher under 20 minutes. Such are the challenges of the Chris Severy-namesake course. Sarah Wagler tuned up for her championship season by beating the girls field by over a minute with a 22:11 finishing time. Aspen won kept both team trophies safely with city limits.

Ancient Trails Invitational

Montezuma County Fairgrounds Cortez, CO
Oct 6, 2017

It's not a grinder in quite the same sense that Chris Severy is, but this is a challenging course that is mostly immune to PR kind of performances. Simon Kearns of Mancos took boys individual honors with an 18:01. Jake McKie and Caleb Yoder gave Mancos the top three places, and the Blue Jays went on to an easy team title. Durango's B team girls grabbed seven of the first nine places, and there really wasn't much more to be said about that.
