Cole Sprout and Carter Dillon ran a race for the ages at Mullen. Both ran 4:12 with Sprout taking the win.

Cole Sprout appears to be the current favorite to take down the 37 year old record in 4A. He's just a few weeks removed from his 9:01 3,200 Colorado record, and he's run the third-fastest 1,600 in Colorado this year at 4:12.75.

Adding to Sprout's odds are the fact that he hasn't lost in Colorado this year, so he enters the state meet as the favorite to win the 4A state title.

What makes Sprout dangerous for his competition, and for the record, is his unwavering desire to hurt from the start - he has no problem leading races, or running a hot pace from the gun.

In order for Sprout to claim the record, which he's already stated he intends to chase, he'll have to beat Silver Lake senior James Lee, who undoubtedly intends to cap his high school career with a state title.
