Potts Indoor Invitational

Rembember Kelsey English at Doherty High School? She cleared 5-10 in the high jump today for CU. Here's a quick little reminder for those who have forgotten:

In other notes of local interest, Durango HS and University of Colorado alum Laura Thweatt dusted the fields in the 800 and mile. Though Thweatt usually goes longer these days, she can still turn in over--2:14 and 4:55.

It wasn't a multis meet, but Abrianna Torres had a multi kind of day nevertheless, going 19-8 in the long jump 41-2 in the shot put, and 9.10 in the 60 hurdles.

Reno Pole Vault Summit

As the saying goes, everybody who's somebody (with a pole) figures to be there.

Maybe the best name in the entire Colorado indoor season is Andrew Barlow of the Above the Bar Pole Vault Club. But, it's not just a name. Barlow cleared 14-4 in the pole vault in Reno. Christina Stathakis was 11-0. Two nice clearances...

University of Nebraska Holiday Inn Invitational

Friday's events are now complete and there are several highlights for the Colorado athletes. Chief among those highlights, however, would be a 5000 meter run title for Mountain View grad and current UNC runner McKayla Grey. Grey won the event in 17:50.82. In fact, the distance events were more or less dominated by UNC and Air Force, with wins going to Isaiah Bragg (5000), Patrick Corona (3000), Rikki Gonzales (Mile), Zach Perkins (Mile), and Annette Eichenberger (1000). Eichenberger's 2:51.19 established a new Air Force Academy record for the 1000 meter run. Complete results through Friday's events are linked immediately below.

Friday Meet Results

Things continued on a nice clip for several AFA and UNC athletes on Saturday. Isaiah Grady had a second in the 60 meters. Mark Husted--not exactly a collegian any longer--won the 800. Kobi Rex, Taylor Smith, and Trevor Evanson made it a 1-2-3 sweep in the high jump for the Colorado schools. Kyle Gartrell won the unseeded long jump and finished seventh in the seeded long jump, and I have to tell you I don't understand exactly how that works.

For the women, Zainab Sanni got a fourth in the 60, but ran 7.47 for third in the prelims. Bethany Praska--who, like Mark Husted, no longer qualifies as a collegian--obliterated the field in the 600. UNC posted an 11:53 DMR for second.

Adams State Indoor Open

The Bubble will be put to its first big test with this one. Teams are coming in from Eastern New Mexico, New Mexico Highlands, New Mexico JC, Metro State, Colorado Mines, Colorado Mesa, Western State, UCCS, CSU-Pueblo, and Colorado College. Figure there's a run a local dining establishments as soon as this one is done. Make sure the coolers are stocked well, because these young men and women will be bringing an appetite.

Border War Dual

Colorado State University vs. Wyoming. The rivalry doesn't figure to take a turn toward the violent as it occasionally does in football, but this is a rivalry all the same. The good folks enduring winter in Gillette, Wyoming, get to take this one in.

CSU left their distance program at home, which may have had something to do with the ultimate outcome here. That aside, Troy Johnson won the 60 in an impressive 6.82. Something is seriously wrong with the men's 200 meter results from the meet. Josh Sandin leaped a nice 6.91m for the long jump win. Mason Finley, not exactly known first for his weight throw, threw 19.41 (63-8) to win the event, just ahead of CSU's Ken Harriman. That throw won't get him to nationals, but if it's indicative of more to come, we just might have to keep watching here.

For the women, McKenzie Brogan doubled up for wins in the 400 and 600. CSU's Jessica Sharbono (photo, above) had a big shot put, and Kiah Hicks battled with Wyoming's Shreese Daniels before settling for second in the weight throw, but with a very nice mark of 19.57m.

Martin Luther King Mile-Hi Classic

This meet got a little boost with the availability of the Cadet Field House on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend. Now, instead of being at the end of January, this meet runs on the holiday weekend of its namesake. The Cadet Field House is a spacious venue and that space figures to be put to very good use this weekend. Figure this is the biggest high school indoor meet in Colorado yet this season, with the younger age groupers taking the track before the high schoolers start at around noon.

And, we didn't know about this one in advance, but Zac Petrie made a trip to Arkansas to run this weekend. You need to have a pretty good reason to go all the way to Arkansas to run an indoor 800. As it turned out, Petrie had an outstanding reason--1:54.19. For the moment, that has Petrie parked at #2 in the national rankings in that event. It should also have a lot of people a whole lot more concerned about Valor Christian this spring.
