Weekend in review: big marks fall like snow

Aaron Ragin whittled a few hundredths of a second off his season-best 400 mark on the hairpins of Steinhauer on Saturday. Colorado Track XC file photo.

It was USATF-Colorado's big show in Boulder, but a lot of the thunder dispersed a few miles south on Highway 93 to Golden. But, no matter where you were, there were some big marks to be had.

Apparently, it helps to have a short last name. Ask Dior Hall, or Chyna Ries, or Shayna Yon. Regardless of the explanation, there were some big marks coming out of Steinhauer Field House. How big is Dior Hall's 8.18? Consider that the all-time US#1 belongs to Jackie Coward at 8.16. On a good day, your eyeball might possibly be able to detect that kind of difference. How good was Chyna Ries's 20-5.75? It ties her own best mark at #3 on the all-time Colorado high school list. Shayna Yon? All she did was improve her national ranking in two events with season-best marks in the long jump and 60 metes.

Tim Rutherford doesn't have weight throw on his lists of Colorado all-time best high school marks, but maybe he needs to add the category. In any case, we're open to arguments if anyone thinks Haley Showalter's 55-2.5 isn't the state's all-time best at her level.

As you can see below, it was a long list of nice marks. Of special note is the fact that Connor Turnage's long jump progress seems to be marching ahead while he remains plateaued, for the moment, in the triple jump. These things have a way of shifting...

USATF-Colorado State Indoor Championships

Carly Lester's 25.88 200 on the bends of Balch stands out as a noteworthy mark. I don't want to ask how close that took her to those supporting beams. Carly Paul upped the season high jump standard to 5-7. She's certainly had jumps earlier in the season with that kind of clearance, so it's no big surprise she got the mark.

In what could be previewing some races at state later this spring, Jai'Shawn Thompson edged Brandon Singleton in the 200. And Nathan Dunivan was instantly out into PR territory to start the season with his 54-11.5. We've mentioned before how good the 4A shot put could get this spring. Think of this as the first deposit on that promise. We suspect Dunivan has been lifting weights in his discretionary time.
