Being Stanford-bound, this weekend figures to be Elise Cranny's last cross country appearance in Colorado for at least a good, long time. Colorado Track XC file photo.
Collegiate indoor action this weekend splits the distance runners between Seattle and Ames, while most of the rest of the athletes split out between Alamosa and the Air Force Academy. A closer look at each of the meets we'll be following this weekend appears below:
02/13 - 02/15 |
There is no high school indoor track and field action this weekend west of the Mississippi except in Pocatello. That's how big this meet is. The Colorado contingent this year is both large and competitive. We will be tracking results and posting updates as the action takes place. Look for updates to begin Thursday evening. |

The Dempsey Arena in Seattle boasts a 307-meter oversized oval. It's almost, but not quite like running on an outdoor track. And, there's no wind and it's sea level. Distance runners converge here in massive numbers to try to crank out great times. Several succeed. Just be glad you're not the guy who had to figure out where on the oval all the races start. Colorado, Colorado State, Adams State, and Western State are sending delegations there. |
Seattle, WA |
02/14 - 02/15 |
Think of this as the alternate pool to the Husky Classic for distance races on an oversized oval near sea level. And maybe the fields, and perhaps the venue itself, are a little less crowded in Ames than Seattle. In any case, Air Force will be adding to the crowd in Ames that will be greeted by yet another blast of arctic air on Friday. Perhaps that's why it's indoor track and field. |

Adams State Indoor NCAA Qualifier For the Grizzlies not making the trip to Seattle, a home meet beckons this weekend. The meet will draw heavily from the state's DII programs. |
Alamosa, CO |
02/15 |
Like Adams State, Air Force is also hosting a home indoor event this weekend. Modest by Air Force standards, the meet will still host several local programs and also figures to draw a substantial number of open entries. |

USA Cross Country Championships For distance types not headed to Seattle or Ames this weekend, Boulder is the place to be. Even in the Masters Divisions, this event promises to be very competitive. Perhaps owing to the fear factor many have of running at altitude, the Junior divisions are a little thin on numbers of entries, but the fields should be very competitive nevertheless. For a little bit of Colorado cross country history, come watch Jenny Simpson, Melody Fairchild, and Elise Cranny all run at the same meet. The parallel trifecta among the men would appear to be either Doug Bell or Rich Castro, Brent Vaughn, and Bailey Roth. |
