Western State to host high school indoor meet on January 31

Most of you know by now that Western State Colorado University has a shiny new indoor facility. Six lanes of 200 meter indoor oval, plus full field event venues. If you're like me, you've been itching to see it for yourself.

If you're a high school athlete, your ship is coming into view.

On Saturday, January 31, Western State will open their facility to host the Western State High School Indoor Open. All standard indoor events will be contested, plus they are proposing a bit of an unusual indoor event--an indoor steeple. The water pit isn't on the table for this, but a steeple barrier on each straightaway is. With the steeple growing in popularity at the high school level, here's a chance to get your feet (almost) wet in the event. 1600 meters will be your distance.

For those with inquiring minds, Western State also plans to host a full slate of collegiate indoor meets this winter. This will include the Indoor Opener on January 16, the Indoor Shootout and January 30, the Alumni Open on February 6-7, and the RMAC Conference Championships on February 27-28.

Registration details for the Western State High School Indoor Open will be posted here as they become available. And, you'd better believe that Colorado Track XC is already clearing calendar space to be there with you on January 31.

If you've never been to Gunnison in the winter, it's time to find out what you're missing!
