1A Thursday Notes

This isn't an attempt to cover everything that happened in 1A's Thursday competition, but it should touch on most of the highlights.

Ginger Hutton, who looks to have a four-event weekend ahead of her, took things conservatively in today's 3200, staying behind the Sisters Rairdon for six laps before dropping a big 800 to take the win. Rachel and Rebekah Rairdon may have been on a similar plan in the interest of Heritage Christian's title hopes and seemed content not to contest Hutton over the last 800 meters and simply taking second and third. Both SMW and HCA came out of the event with a bundle of points.

Shining Mountain wasn't so fortunate when Keli Hall lost out to Elbert's Lauren Pearson in the run-off for a 100 meter slot on Saturday.

Antonya Schaffert took the pole vault, as expected, at 9-9, which is probably a bit better than was expected. Eads dominated the girls discus with Brooke Lenox, Eboni Nash, and Mariah Smith going 1-2-4. It looked pretty convincing from any angle or distance.

Eads also got a win in the boys long jump when Caden Parker edged out Granada's Koy Palmer. Luke Duggan won a battle of attrition in the boys 3200, one which saw Heritage Christian Academy slip a little behind schedule on what team title hopes they brought into the weekend. Springfield, however, may have slipped more when they managed only a 1-3-9 in the boys shot put. Andy Borunda took the win at 47-1, but pre-meet projections had the Longhorns picking up a lot more points in this event.
