The 400 As the Key to the Pentathlon

Becca Schulte and Calvin Munson, both better known for their 400 speed than their multi-event prowess, walked away as state pentathlon champions on Wednesday. Colorado Track XC file photos by Alan Versaw.

Admittedly, it's not a standard pentathlon. And, with a different set of events, we could possibly have seen a different outcome. But, for these five events on May 27, Becca Schulte and Calvin Munson are your 2015 State Pentathlon champions.

For Schulte, it was a fairly comfortable margin of victory, though Schulte did not have the lead going into the final 800-meter event. Schulte would overtake strong contenders in Heather Betz and Sydney Wetterstrom with a blistering 2:17.86 800 meter run. Schulte's final total of 3068 was more than 100 ahead of both Betz and Wetterstrom.

For Munson, it mean holding off a determined challenge from Kyle Rex in the 1500 meters. Though Rex outpointed Munson by 10 points in the 1500 meter run, that only made up half the difference between the two going into the final event. Munson finished with 2931 to Rex's 2921.

Paving the way to their overall titles, both Schulte and Munson took top honors in two indivdual events. For Schulte, it was the 200 and 800. For Munson, it was the 200 and, perhaps a bit surprisingly, the long jump.

Mountain View's Ryan Vomacka was in the thick of things for the boys title until a NH in the high jump derailed his aspirations.

Rangely freshman Patrick Scoggins made his mark on the competition with a finishing total of 2573. If I've done my math correctly, that placed him fourth among the boys in the competition.
