In case you hadn't noticed, the top cross county program in the state is a little better this fall. And, the rest of the country is having to start to take notice as well.

Under the cool of a California evening, Mountain Vista's boys took a strong fourth and the girls rose to sixth in the Sweepstakes race at this year's running of the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic.

More impressive still, Allie Chipman conquered all foes in the Sweepstakes race and came home with the individual title in 16:31.1. That meant beating the best of Great Oak, Desert Vista, and a few other schools of national prominence. Mountain Vista's 265 team points gave them 6th in the 26-team Sweepstakes field, and second to Desert Vista among Southwest region teams.

Mountain Vista's boys were led by a ninth-place finish by Paxton Smith in 14:30.3. That got a team tally rolling that would later stop at 141 points in fourth place. For reference, that was 14 points behind Southwest rival Desert Hills (Utah) in third, but well ahead of Desert Vista in eighth.

Also competing from Colorado in the two-day event were Cheyenne Mountain and Frontier Academy. Cheyenne Mountain's boys won the White Varsity Boys B race, with James Jones leading the way with an individual title at 15:05. Veronica Brtek's 18:11 was good enough for fourth in the corresponding girls race, helping Cheyenne Mountain to a fourth-place finish there.

Frontier Academy's boys were led by Isaiah Remington's 15:18. The Wolverines ended up 20th in a field of 30 teams in the Rated Boys race.
