Would You Believe It's Track Season in 12 Days?

Duane McClurkin was on top of his high jump for last year's Air Force Holiday Open. Who will be itching to test the waters this year? Colorado Track XC file photo by Alan Versaw.

It's been more or less all cross country since the State Fair Street Vault did its thing on September 5. You could argue that the Tomahawk 2 Mile constituted a track meet, but it was hard to say that with a straight face when everyone there was prepping for Nike Cross Regionals eight days later.

But, real track and field hits the scene again starting on December 10. The multis portion of the Colorado School of Mines Alumni open begins on Thursday and continues through Friday. The more typical indoor track events take place on Saturday--all of this at the newly renovated Steinhauer Field House in Golden.

Meanwhile, the Air Force Academy hosts its annual Holiday Open on Friday afternoon and evening, December 11, at the Cadet Field House.

After these two meets, things go quiet for four weeks, save for an Above the Bar pole vault competition over the holidays.

Both meets provide opportunity for the local collegiate athletes to shake off a little rust before taking something of a break over the holidays. Both meets will also host a few high school athletes anxious to put on the spikes and see where their off-season training has taken them.

Direct Athletics is taking the entries for both meets.

A glimpse back at last year gives us some idea of the level of performances that can be turned up even on the first weekend of the indoor season. Among the marks turned in on this weekend last year were a 9.03 60 meter hurdles by Zoe Gilbertson, a 12-5.5 pole vault by Andrea Willis, and a pair of 6-6.75 high jumps by Duane McClurkin and Chris Linnin.

Over the next two weeks, we'll take some time to review rankings of last year's indoor performances.

Indoor coverage plans are already being constructed for Colorado Track XC. We definitely plan to be at the Air Force Holiday Open and will make the trip up to Golden on the 12th if the number of high school entries warrants the coverage. Featured coverage meets this winter include the Martin Luther King Mile-High, the Air Force High School Indoor Open, and the Great Southwest Indoor
