Back to life: Cheyenne Mountain comes up big at Doherty Invite

It's been a while since we've heard from the Cheyenne Mountain Indian cross country teams. The teams running at Friday's Doherty Invite are probably relieved that we don't hear from Cheyenne Mountain any more frequently than we do. When they come knocking, they bust down the door.

Cheyenne Mountain's girls knocked off the highly regarded Doherty girls at the latter's own invitational by a score of 28 - 44. On the boys side Cheyenne Mountain once again turned back second-place Doherty, this time by a score of 52 - 102.

For the girls, Danielle Grossman (CM) won the individual title on the hilly Bear Creek Regional Park course with a 19:30 time. Doherty's Lynnea Sjoerdsma was a close second in 19:33, and Casey Powell (CM) was third in 19:55. No other runners finished under 20:00. Cheyenne Mountain went 1-3-6-7-11, while Doherty finished 2-5-9-13-16 (14th place was removed in the team score, which accounts for the discrepancy between the places and the point total).

Jawaro Abdi of Denver South (above, photo by Mark Weeks) took honors in the boys race with a 17:19.2 finish, barely edging Cheyenne Mountain's Lance Knight, who finished at 17:19.5. Erik Williams led the Doherty contingent with a fifth-place finish in 17:38. Cheyenne Mountain went 2-6-10-15-19 to account for their team score.
