2017 R2-J Invitational: A Barnburner In An Open Field

Thompson Valley's Cindy Ybarra threw for a major PR of 128-3 to win the discus competition in front of the hometown crowd.

Just about everyone knows the R2J meet has a standing reputation for turning up solid marks. Not every event every year, but there's always a rather nice collection of marks coming out of this meet.

And, you'd never guess that by looking at the setting.

The Loveland track has stands--well, sort of. It's a black track without the polyurethane coating on top. The jump runways are functional, but nothing special.

Clearly, it's the teams that come--and not the facility--that brings the heat to this meet.

Yes, indeed, the heat comes. Palmer Ridge left a lot of varsity regulars at home with their league meet on top for Saturday. Lutheran left a lot of their top sprinters home. But, Mullen, Loveland, Mountain View, Thompson Valley, The Classical Academy, Battle Mountain, and more brought the goods.

And, when the day drew to an end, there had been some serious rewriting of the rankings around the state.
