2017 Centennial League: And On To State!

Boys Highlights

Though Cherokee Trail's girls couldn't withstand the barrage of points filling up the scoring ledger by Grandview, their boys wouldn't suffer the same fate. CT posted a strong total of 132 points to take the Centennial League title from the shores of Cherry Creek Reservoir to the shores of Aurora Reservoir. The battle for second, however, was nip-and-tuck throughout the day. Ultimately it was Cherry Creek that prevailed with 111.50 points. Following in the next three positions were Arapahoe, Grandview, and Eaglecrest, separated by a mere four points.

The Cougars secured three league titles on the day. Those went to Ruben Estrada in the discus, Kellen Monestime's excellent 37.93 in the 300 hurdles, and Rylan Wallace's late surge for victory in the 1600. Support was also provided to CT's title in the form Blaize Holland who snared a couple of top 3 finishes in the 200 and 400, and from Dawson Spann with an almost-always-winning-jump of 23-2 for 2nd in the long jump.

Additionally, the Cougars' 4x100 squad ran a time of 42.16, which wins many races but not when Mullen posts a near meet record 41.83.

Grandview's Hayden Blubaugh provided Grandview with its grandest highlight of the day. Blubaugh's leap of 23-5 was wind-legal and thus establishes him as one to be reckoned with next week. Aaron Harris was third in that long jump. Brandon Bodner provided solid points in the 200 and 400 meter dashes.

Cherry Creek was led throughout the day by Daniel Hamson, who blasted to an eye-popping 54 second opening quarter of the 800, building a large lead. Though he tied up in the last fifty meters and finished second to Arapahoe's Micah Conley, it's apparent both can run faster. Conley finished in 1:56.85 while Hamson clocked in at 1:57.60. Hamson ran a strong leg on the Bruins' victorious 4x400 relay. Kyle Moran chipped in a third in the the 1600, despite heat that reached well into the 80s beating down on the runners. Cyprien Toffa's two 2nd place finishes in the hurdle events contributed nice points as well.

Overland had a couple of event victories from Cameron Murray in the 200 and 400, at 21.78 and 48.26, respectively. A repeat of that at Jeffco next week and he'll garner two very high finishes for the Blazers.

A victory by Josiah Barker in the pole vault was one highlight for Eaglecrest, as was another strong race from Mason (DJ) Brown, this time a 2nd, in the 1600. Kenny Wantings provided two runner-up finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

Along with Conley, Arapahoe benefitted from the 2-3 finish in the pole vault by Jorgenson and Hampton, and some strong hurdling from Blayne Lincoln. The Warriors demonstrated what could have been, considering they disqualified an 8:00 flat 4x800 on Thursday, with three of the top four places in the 800. Behind Conley's victory was James Logan in 3rd and Patrick Kunz in 4th.

Mullen's Christian Cumber ran 11.01 to snatch victory in the 100 meters, which was all the more impressive considering the strong headwind of -3.5.

Injury-depleted Smoky Hills' main highlights was a second place in the 4x400 relay, and some decent hurdling and relay work by Darrius Gaw.
