James, Fagerlin Stake Claims To Pearl Street Mile Titles

Taylor James laid claim the fastest high school girl in the Pearl Street Mile. File photo.

Like it was in Fort Collins on Tuesday, the field of high school competitors at Wednesday evening's running of the Pearl Street Mile was a little on the side of thin. 12 girls and 27 boys finished the races.

Interestingly, both races featured more of a younger set of athletes. Of the 12 girls, two were age 16, while the rest were younger. Of the 27 boys, there were five 17-year-olds (and they tended to finish high in the field), while the rest of the field was younger, including 11 14-year-olds.

Niwot and Resurrection Christian were the schools with the deepest representation. Resurrection Christian may have sent the entire teams, or at least close to it.

Taking the wins were incoming Niwot freshman Taylor James at 5:35 and Resurrection senior Christian Fagerlin at 4:39. Erie's Emily Condon (5:39) and Ares Reading (4:46) out of Longmont--though I do not have him attached to a high school--ran seconds.

Monarch and recent University of Colorado grad Maddie Alm took top honors among women overall with a time of 4:55. Isaac Green ran in the top heat of the men's mile, finishing in 4:18 and eighth place.

On your watch list for the future, note that 11-year-old Ava Mitchell ran 5:40 in the open women's race. Ouch, it looks as if that young lady needs a brand new MileSplit profile...
