Cheyenne Mountain Stampede 2017: Breaking In The Season Well

2A

Lots of teams make it to the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede, but not lots of 2A teams. In all there were six scoring girls teams and seven scoring boys teams. That's not a large slice of 2A.

Add to that the consideration that St. Mary's (Colorado Springs) was one of those scoring teams in both cases. Up until yesterday, I was pretty sure St. Mary's was a 3A program. They were last year, and this is the middle of a cycle, so they should be this year as well. But, there they were, squarely in the middle of the 2A races. I'll try to get you an official update on where the Pirates stand. For the record, the latest version of the 2017 CHSAA Cross Country Bulletin has them domiciled in 3A Region 2.

For now, let's just say that if St. Mary's is actually in 2A this fall, they represent a serious threat to claim the shiny gold girls trophy. They cleaned up on the field, and it's difficult to see another 2A field they wouldn't come into as favorites. Hannah McReavy, Ana Muehlbauer, and Josephine Howery went 1-2-4, and that was the story. McReavy just missed breaking 20 minutes on a hot day.

Subplots to the story included a single-entry delegation from Telluride, and a nice showing by Peyton. Peyton put four in the top 14 for a relatively easy second place. Rocky Ford was third.

Among the 2A boys, Cody Danley and Jaden Evans broke from everyone and made it a two-man race. Eventually, Danley broke from Evans and pretty much had his stadium finish to himself. Danley finished in 17:22.

Team scoring was Rocky Ford, followed by Peyton and Buena Vista. Last year, it was the Buena Vista girls snaring headlines; this year it looks like most of that water will be carried by the boys.

Rocky Ford only beat Peyton by nine points, but that margin is larger than it seems on account of a small field and only scoring three runners. In addition to having the individual champion, Rocky Ford had three across the line before Peyton had two. You're not going to lose many (2A) races that way. Noel Lopez and Joaquin Munoz finished the job Cody Danley started.
