2017 UCCS Rust Buster: 1, 2, 3, 4, Rampart!

Rampart's boys were neither challenged nor made to feel that way.

After years of renting out Monument Valley Park for a smallish collegiate meet, UCCS cross country decided to make it a more cost-effective rental and invite all the local high schools and middle schools.

The idea met with more or less instant success. Vista Ridge folded their Labor Day weekend meet, and Widefield moved theirs to another weekend, leaving UCCS as the lone meet in town.

But, it wasn't clear--at least initially--how local programs would respond to a 4K race distance. As it turns out, the crowd was okay with it, and anyone who wasn't okay with it had meet options up and down the Front Range (well, okay, mostly up).

In all, better than 20 high school programs converged on Monument Valley Park, with close to another 10 middle school programs, and made a festive event of it. Nobody seemed to much mind the 4K race distance (2K for middle school).

Conditions were definitely warm. Were it not for the trees in the park, wind also would have exacted a toll on the times for the day, but the trail up the middle of Monument Valley Park is very nicely protected from most that the wind can dish out.
