MileSplit50 Girls Indoor 2018

Rank Athlete/Team Comments

Everyone expected a new #1 this week, but most probably thought it would be Katelyn Tuohy. I went back and forth on this for a long time. Both are extremely worthy of being at the top, but there can only be one. I chose Masai Russell. Here's why. This year she's been part of a national record 4x2, #2 all time 4x4, #2 all time shuttle hurdle relay, Russel is US #1 in the 55H after beating a loaded field this weekend, and top 15 in the 200m/300m/400m even though she hasn't run those events since December. Remember that MileSplit50 is not ranking athletes by historical significance, but by impact on this season. Right now, Masai Russell is the MVP of indoor track. By the end of the season, she may very well have put together once of the most memorable indoor campaigns ever.

Not much needs to be said about Katelyn Tuohy. 5K national record speaks for itself. I still think North Rockland could put together an elite DMR, which would be a big help for Tuohy who can't match the relay success that Russell is having with Bullis. They return three from their 2017 championship team. They'd likely have to move Morales to the 1200m and someone to fill the gap in the 8, which would mean Tuohy gets the baton with ground to make up...but that's what we all want to watch anyways right? Tuohy going beast mode having to split a 4:30 to win.

LTT falls in the rankings but still had a really strong weekend. 6.86 US #2 in the 55m and a 21-8 #2 all time mark in the long jump.

Chmiel represented Team USA in a big way in Scotland, winning Great Edinburgh XC. She beat Foot Locker champion Claudia Lane. She's already back racing on the track with two US #2 performances in the mile and DMR.
6
We heard a lot about Bullis, but Western Branch also had a big weekend at the VA Showcase. They're top three in the US in the 4x2 and 4x4. Ballard was also top three in both of her individual events.
7
Two major wins and two US #1 times for Wilson against tough competition at the VA Showcase.
8
The PA sprint star is starting to make her presence felt this season on the national level with a US #1 6.77 55m win in Virginia.
9
Grace Stark lowered her 60m season best to 6.52.
10
Hall finished 5th in the 500m at the VA Showcase and was on both the 4x4 and 4x2 record setting Bullis relays.
11
Wilkinson won the VA Showcase 1000m in a much closer race than we expected. Friends Central also won the DMR in a US top five time.
12
McNeil closed hard on Britton Wilson in the 500m at the VA Showcase and nearly had her at the finish. Her second place 1:12.39 ranks #2 on the year. Franklin also lowered their season best 4x4 time to 3:44.
13
All of the Bullis athletes got in on the record breaking action at Liberty. Seymour ran on the 4x2, won the 200m in a US top ten time, and was second in the 55m to Thelma Davies.
14
On another weekend, Watson's performances would have been a bigger highlight. Unfortunately her marks were overshadowed by the VA Showcase talent. Still impressive that her 500m win was only half a second slower than Britton Wilson's. Watson also was just half a second off of her US #1 1:32.31 in the 600m.
15
Sloan moves up to #2 in the 60H with a 8.33. She also beat 60m US #6 Sydnee Larkin in the 60m.
16
Kori Carter makes a huge leap in the MileSplit50. She beat Shadajah Ballard in the 300m, finishing second to Britton Wilson. She was 4th in the 55H final ahead of Leah Phillips, and Nansemond River posted an impressive 1:39 in the 4x200m.
17
Leah Phillips finished 5th in the loaded 55H final at the VA Showcase and carrier the stick for a leg of the national record 4x200m.
18
Cameron Hinton falls a few places. Even though the 4x4 ran extremely well, she ended up sixth overall in the 300m.

Another Sunday meet this week for Larkin. She was second to Emily Sloan in the 60m and had yet another 40+ performance in the triple jump.
21
Jasmine Moore is back! Junior class national record and #8 all time 42-06.75. She's also US top five in the long jump.
22
Lee ran a solo US #3 2:54 1000m two weeks ago.
23
Tia Jones has started her indoor season and it only took one race to move into the top three in the 60H.
24
Big moves for the Pickerington girls this week. McKenzie Long was third in the 55m final behind Thelma Davies and Ashley Seymour, and again finished behind Seymour in the 200m with a US top ten 24.38. Pickerington Central is top ten this year in the 4x2. Unfortunately they did not race in the loaded VA Showcase race. Had they competed and been able to lower their season best, there's a good chance Long would've moved up higher.
25
Peoples is really starting to find her form this year. She was just tenths behind Vanessa Watson in the New Balance Games 500m. Peoples is #4 in the 500m and her NB Games 600m win is top ten in that event.
26
Jaydan Wood is the second Pick Central athlete to break into the top 30 this week. Wood was third in the VA Showcase 500m, 9th in the 300m, and has shown excellent range from the 60m to the 800m this season.
27
Taylor Grimes was third in the 55H final at the VA Showcase behind Masai Russell and Shadajah Ballard. She is getting close to 40' in the triple jump, but struggled moving up in distance to the 300m.
28
Ebb makes a nice jump in the rankings after helping her team dominate the 4x4 and finishing 4th in the 500m.
29
Add some more wins to the resume for the young Virginia sprinter. 55m & 300m champ at the New Balance Games.

Bailey Lear briefly lost her #1 mark in the 400m, but quickly took it back becoming the first athlete to break 54s this season. Her 53.8 came in the prelims at Texas Tech. She chose not to race the 200 or 400 final for a chance at the 4x4. She's not yet sure how many more events she'll be able to race indoors.
32
Colbert was third to Ashley Seymour and McKenzie Long in the 200m at the VA Showcase.
33
Townsend takes a drop in the rankings after a two week stretch where her performances couldn't match the other elite athletes around the country.
34
There were a lot of fast DMRs this weekend, but none faster than Padua Academy's 11:58.
35
Taylor gets a big win for her season over Sophia Myers in the Millrose trials 55m.
36
4th in the Millrose trials 55m and 2nd in the 300m.

EXPLAINING MILESPLIT50:

These are subjective rankings of the top 50 athletes across all indoor track and field events. Feel free to reach out to MileSplit via email (travis.miller@flosports.tv) or on Twitter (@milesplit or @TravisMillerFlo)

Here are the attributes MileSplit considered when ranking athletes (in no particular order):

- IAAF points for ballpark numbers to compare performances across different events

- PRs

- Returning indoor track & field rankings

- Significant wins/results in previous indoor seasons

- More weight on "championship" events (I took stats and performances from ALL events into consideration, but championship events are more important at the national level)

- Participation in relays

- 2018 indoor track & field results

- Indoor competition frequency (these are rankings for indoor track & field, not necessarily the best all around XC/indoor/outdoor athletes)
