One More Time At The Line For The Mooney Twins

Destiny Awaits

Madison has been on the state radar since her freshmen year. She's been taking the podium one step at a time, literally.

She ran 2:12.38 her freshmen year, and placed fourth in the 800. A year later she ran 2:12.32 to place third at state, but went on to run 2:10.18 at New Balance Nationals Outdoor, winning the event. Last year she took one more step up on the podium, placing second in 2:11.15.

Her 1,600 races at state are nearly the same - she placed third as a freshmen in 5:05, second as a sophomore in 5:02, and seventh last year in 5:06.

Now she's got one more step to take.

Though, she could do it in the 800, or the 1,600 - she's No. 1 in both events this year. She ran a 2:10.19 PR a week ago at St. Vrain - that's the fastest time in all-classifications, and she's one of two girls who have broken 5 in the mile in Colorado this year. Her 4:55 leads the way in all-classifications as well.

Destiny is written all over taking that final step to the top of the podium for Madison, though it's the 1,600 that she seems to covet the most.

"Winning the mile would probably be the most rewarding," Madison shared. "Since my older sister won the mile at state her senior year, then was disqualified after the race. If I could win that race, it would be redemption for her."

The race she's referring is the 2016 1,600. Madison finished second in that race because of her sister's DQ.

Though, Madison is quick to compliment the competition - she knows state will be no stroll.

"There's a lot of competition in the mile this year," Madison opined. "It'll be tough."

And the 1,600 isn't the only race she's got her eyes set on winning, she's the favorite in the 800 as well.

"Obviously, the ultimate goal is to win," she said. "But like the mile, it won't come easy. It'll come down to the very last step. I'm ready for anything."

Ready for anything seems fitting for the senior. She's been racing on the big stage since she was a freshmen, and enters the state meet with more experience than anyone.

While Madison is preparing to toe the line with four years of competitive running experience behind her, her brother Michael is the shock of the Colorado distance scene this season.
