Kelley, Gaylord, and Ross Shine Bright In 2A


Remington Ross claimed two state titles over the weekend - the 100 and the 200.

For the girl's sprints Remington Ross continued her winning ways, claiming the 100 and the 200. The Highland sophomore blitzed the field, running 12.19 in the 100, and 25.16 in the 200. Taking the runner-up spot in both races was Brittany Fuchs

Two went under the magical 60-second mark in the 400, led by junior Kaiya Firor from Hotchkiss. Firor ran 58.29 to win by a full second.

Peyton's Kaylee Kearse was the winner of the 800, running 2:18.20. The victory was a clear second ahead of Hannah Wilkie, who placed second in 2:19.24.

Soleil Gaylord capped off her high school career in style, claiming the 1,600 and the 3,200 with ease, and placing fifth in the 800. The Telluride senior has been one of the most dominating runners in 2A, and she made sure to keep her record in tact. Gaylord ran 5:10 to dominate the 1,600 by 10 seconds, and 11:16 in the 3,200 for a 37-second victory.

Soleil Gaylor capped her high school career with two state titles - the 1,600 and the 3,200.

Likewise, Mattie Rossi was a dominating force in the 100 hurdles. The Soroco senior was untouchable in the prelims and the finals, running 15.74 for the state title.

In the 300 hurdles the race was all Firor, who ran away with a one-second victory in 46.17.

The top six went over five feet in the high jump, led by Katie Kurzwho went 5-3 for the state title. The win was just one inch ahead of Shaelyn Walton, who went 5-2.

Pre-meet favorite Taeryn Trumper did not disappoint in the long jump. The sophomore went 18-01.75 for the win.

McKenna Palmer enjoyed a similar dominance in the triple jump, winning the event by over a foot in 36-3.75. Additionally, she was second in the long jump to Trumper.

In the pole vault there wasn't anyone who could keep up with Logan KuskieThe Lyons sophomore was the lone vaulter over 11 feet, going 11-2 for the state title.

Meeker went 1-2 in the discus, with Megan Shelton claiming the event in 124-9. Her teammate, Sydnie Main

was right behind in 120-8.

Alex Bauer capped her high school career with a state title in the shot put. The Burlington senior went 39-2.25.

The relays were a hotly contested competition. The 4x1 saw the top five teams go under 42 seconds, and run within three-hundredths of a second of each other. Peyton inched ahead for the state title, running 51.69, which was just ahead of Highland's 51.73, and Calhan's 51.75.

Peyton duplicated the feat in the 4x2, winning the event over Lyons this time. Peyton ran 1:48.93.

Denver Christian had their day in the Spring Medley Relay. They won the event over Hotchkiss, running 1:51.67.

The 4x4 went to Vail Christian, who ran away for a two second victory, running 4:09.

The 4x8 went down to the final leg, with Paonia using a strong kick to win the event in 9:57.

The girl's team race was close, like the boys, but it was Highland who came away with the state title. They tallied 75.5 points to beat Lyons, who tallied 64. Soroco was third with 52 points, just ahead of Meeker's 51.
