Summer Reading List: Books To Get You Through The Hard Miles

1. Once A Runner by John L. Parker

The Classic.

I've read this book so many times, I've had to tape the cover. I even went as far as buying a new "readable" copy, so I could preserve my original.

I've never met someone who didn't like or get inspired by this book. So, if you decide to read it and dislike it, don't tell me. I'd rather remain in my bubble on this one.

My high school coach (Mill Creek's Andy Christie) suggested this book in the winter of my sophomore year, and it blew me away. I read the book cover to cover in two days - I couldn't put it down.

Granted, this is more of a track book, it does encompass the depths of what is means to be a distance runner.

John L. Parker's cheeky narrative is engaging and playful. It's not hard to find yourself in a character - everyone wants to be A Cassidy. Chapters like The Workout, and The Race, will rip through you and make your blood pump the way it does before a big race. I still get butterflies when reading The Race, even though I know the outcome - it's that good.

The book follows the story of a college miler - you know what? I won't give away the storyline, or much else. Just read the book, it's worth it.

And when you're done, pick up the prequel: Racing the Rain
