Fast Times Way Out West

Central's David Cardenas charges to the finish ahead of Montrose's Sean Graff

With the boys watching the ladies fly to the finish in record times you could feel the adrenaline at the starting line building. The boys just realized how fast this new course would be and were itching to launch in expectation of the potential PRs they were about to chase after. Similar to the girls race the boys race rocketed from the start with three boys charging to the front setting a fast pace.

The three faces at the front were very familiar as the same three battled at the front for the majority of their race last week as well. Central's Tyman Smart would take the early lead with his teammate David Cardenas and Montrose's Sean Graff close on his heels.

This trio would fly by the 1st mile mark with a split of 4:50. Clearly these three were serious about chasing fast times today. Fruita Monument's Bryce Boggs would attempt to stay close to these three followed by a pack of about five others hitting the 1st mile in 5:10.

Clearly the anticipation and excitement of this fast new course was having its effect. At the end of lap one Cardenas would push to the front with Graff latched to his heels and Smart close behind. It stayed this way until the final approach onto the short grass of the fairway leading to the finish.

Cardenas and Graff would battle side by side until the final 100 meters where Cardenas launched his attack and pulled away for the victory running 15:23 dropping 22 seconds off his PR from the week before.

Graff would go on to finish in 15:25 dropping 23 seconds off of his PR from the week before as well. Smart would continue the trend of many PRs on the night finishing 3rd in 15:40 dropping 17 seconds off of his PR.

The chase pack behind these lead three would ultimately reel in Fruita's Boggs with Summit's Max Bonenberger battling it out to the finish with Central's freshman Jordan Leblow

Bonenberger would better his PR from Liberty Bell by 11 seconds running 16:26. Clearly this new course did what it was designed to do, proving plenty of fast times way out west, with eight boys breaking 17:00 for the first time this season.

Central would go on to win the team title with 34 points also placing their top five in the top 15 overall. Summit would finish 2nd with 62 points and clearly their trip way out west was worthwhile providing plenty of new PRs.
