'Tis The Season To Race Indoors

Western's Mountaineer Field House will play host to the Western State High School Open Feb. 9.

There may be no "official" indoor season in Colorado, but there is no shortage of meets, that's for sure.

In fact, there's literally a meet every weekend starting with Sunday's USATF-Colorado All Comers Invitational at Air Force.

A week later the first edition of the Let's Get REAL Classic kicks off on the newly minted track at UCCS with Mark Roberts on the mic as announcer.

Across town and just a day later, the Martin Luther King Mile High Classic will be the second meet at Air Force's 300 meter track in 2019.

Four days later - Thursday, Jan. 17 - the Colorado Mines HS Indoor Series #3 returns for the new year for a mid-week battle indoors.

Three days later - Sunday, Jan. 20 - Air Force hosts its third meet of 2019 with the USATF-Colorado All Comers Invitational

And right on cue and in stride with the quick cadence of the indoor season, the Colorado Mines HS Indoor Series #4 is set for Jan. 24.

The Steinhauer Field House at 'Mines will play host to four more indoor meets before the season is over.

Closing out the month - yes, just the month, not the season - is the USATF-Colorado State Indoor Championships at Air Force on Jan. 27, and the Colorado Mines HS Indoor Series #5 on Jan. 30.

To do the math...

That's nine meets in the span of four tight weeks. And it's only January.

Moving along...

Things heat up quite a bit in February, and I'm not talking about the weather. If January went out in a bang with the USATF-Colorado State Indoor Champs, February ups the ante even further.

The first weekend of February is loaded with not only opportunity, but high-quality competition.

The premier event of the indoor season in Colorado has to be the Air Force High School Indoor Open, set for Feb. 1-2. Last year the meet was a real burner with a ton of national-caliber performances, and this year looks no different.

And just across the town the Lets Get REAL Invitational will be running at the new facility at UCCS Feb. 1.

The iconic blue track at the Cadet Field House will set the stage for the most competitive meet of the season the first weekend in February.

To back up the weekend meet in Colorado Springs, there's the final edition of the Colorado Mines HS Indoor Series #6 in Golden four days later on Feb. 6

And if February hasn't been explosive enough already, a week after Air Force there's the Great Southwest Classic Indoor Invitational in New Mexico, and the Western State High School Indoor Open in Gunnison's thin (fast) air. New to the Western meet this year is the Power & Speed Clinic a day later.

If you're looking for a three-big-weekends-in-a-row deal, there's the Simplot Games in Idaho Feb. 14-16.

That's five stellar meets in the span of nine days.

And if you've got a qualifier and the urge to push off the outdoor season a few weeks, there's New Balance Nationals Indoor March 8-10.

Like I said, there's no shortage of indoor meets...
