Can you hear it?
There's that faint echo of fans cheering. It's a white noise of mixed voices and hushed tones. Then there's the starter's whistle, that special language that every athlete understands, pay attention. And there are spike bags with sticky race numbers, sweaty shoestrings of various colors, and water bottles, always water bottles.
But most of all, there are those strained sounds that almost go unnoticed if you're not listening close enough: that friction of spikes digging into the track for fractions of a second, the swaying of the arms and lifting of the knees. There's that heavy inhale and exhale, the one one that accompanies effort. The breathing is nearly audible at all times.
It all rings in my hears because the outdoor track and field season has finally arrived!
Week 1 has got a handful of big meets on tap, and they're not just outdoors.
It's a big week for Colorado track and field, because not only does the outdoor season finally kick off, but the New Balance Nationals Indoor will play host to a few of the state's best.
We'll have our first winners of the 2019 outdoor season as early as Thursday. The Rangeview Kickoff Invitational and the Continental League Quad #1 kickoff the season, meaning by Friday morning we'll have a slew of results rolling in.
We've got over a dozen meets across the state between Thursday and Saturday, meaning that this time next week we'll have out first set of Colorado Rankings.
And looking at the bigger picture, we've got nearly 80 days and well over 100 meets until the Colorado State Track and Field Championships.
