Broomfield Shootout Lives Up To The Hype!

In the sprints Denver East came to Broomfield and swept the competition.

It was the Keirryse Simpson and Korey Hairston Show in the 100 and the 200, with Simpson claiming both events and Hairston the runner-up. Simpson won the 100 in 11.17, and the 200 in 21.97, while Hairston was was just a stride back in both events, running 11.27 and 22.41.

Zion Wagoner made it a Denver East sweep with his win in the 400, running 50.25. Three cracked 51 seconds, with Daniel Ford finishing second in 50.51, and Jack Wathen third in 50.75.

As dominate as Denver East was in the sprints, Dakota Ridge owned the distance events.

Connor Ohlson dropped a state-leading 1:57.98 to win the 800. And he brought Braden Bartlett and Brody Dempsey under 2 minutes with him. Bartlett finished second in 1:58.86, while Dempsey was just under 2 in 1:59.45.

Ohlson doubled with his win the 1,600, this time it came with a kick down of Cal Banta and Christian Montoya

The trio entered the final lap together before Montoya threw his hat into the ring. The Holy Family senior attacked hard around the top of the track, but Ohlson and Banta were covering every move. Banta made his bid with 200 to go, but Ohlson kicked last, and hard, down the final stretch to claim the W in 4:23, just ahead of Banta's 4:24. Brandon Hippe surged late and caught Montoya at the line, finishing in 4:30 to Montoya's 4:31.

Making it a Dakota Ridge sweep of the distance events was Austin Vancil in the 3,200. The Dakota Ridge senior hit the track for his first go at the deuce this outdoor season, and he came away with a state-leading 9:25. Dillon Powell and Dylan Schubert put together impressive runs of their own, with Powell finishing second in 9:33, and Schubert six seconds back in 9:39.

In the hurdles Dillon Andrews was the clear victor. The Cherokee Trail senior swept both events, winning the 110 in 15.62, and the 300 in a state-leading 38.79.

Eddie Kurjak lead five over the coveted six-foot mark in the high jump. The Longmont sophomore won the event with a 6-4 jump, while Zace Buckhold and Jack Shew were two-inches down at 6-2.

In the long jump Anthony Hicks was the long jumper over 21 feet. The top eight went beyond 20 feet, though it was the Cherokee Trail junior who won the event by nearly a foot, landing at 21-5.

Meanwhile the triple jump was a much closer competition.

Sterling Adams lead Zace Buckhold and Zack Crane over 43 feet, with Adams taking the win in 43-5.25. Buckhold was an agonizing quarter-of-an-inch back in second at 43-5.0, while Crane was four inches back in 43-1. 5.

In the pole vault the top four went over 13 feet, but only one went over 14, and that was Dylan Rodgers. The Boulder High senior went 14-6 to claim the victory.

In the throws spectators caught a glimpse of one of the best in the state: Samuel Dirkes. The Silver Creek senior made no contest of either competition, winning the discus in 178-3, and the shot in 56-10. Dirkes set state-leading marks of 185-1 in the discus and 57-3 in the shot just two days earlier.
