Colorado Rankings: The Thawing Begins

Rewrites!

The third week of the season saw a staggering 23 new state-leading marks. It could be that most meets weren't cancelled, or it could that things are heating up on the track (and the field).

Maybe it's a little bit of both...

Editor's Note: Colorado Rankings Do Not include performances from out of state...

Week 3 saw the Return of Arria Minor, and she did not disappoint. The Sprint Queen of Colorado opened her final outdoor season with a 11.78 100 win at the Denver South Rebel Invite. Currently she's the only girl under 12 seconds.

We also saw the outdoor debut of Broomfield transfer Sydney Holiday. Holiday went 12.21 in the 100 for the second-fastest time in Colorado behind Minor to win the Broomfield Shootout.

If Week 3 had a Star Of The Week, it'd be Taylor James. The Niwot sophomore now owns the top times in Colorado in the 200, 400, and 800, and she achieved the feat over the span of three days. James dropped a state-leading and US No. 7 half-mile, running 2:10.68 at the St. Vrain RE-1J Meet Thursday, then came back Saturday to run a state-leading and US No. 6 quarter-mile, running 54.72 at the Broomfield Shootout. Oh yeah, and she also ran 25.03 for a state-leading time in the 200.

Another big returner to the track was Layla Roebke. The 4A state cross country champ ran a huge personal best for a state-leading 11:03 in the 3,200 at the Broomfield Shootout.

Keep an eye on Kaiya Firor. The Hotchkiss senior ran her first 300 hurdles of the season and nearly set a personal best. Firor ran 45.31 for a new Colorado No.1.

Raina Branch opened her outdoor season this past weekend and clearly made the most of it. The Vista Peak junior went 5-6 in the high jump for a state-leading mark in her first meet of the season.

Likewise, Taryn Burkett dropped a new Colorado No. 1 in the triple jump in her first meet. The Fort Collins sophomore just and PRd with a 38-6 leap.

Mia Manson has gradually perfected her jumps and sprints, and this past week she returned to the pole vault and came away with a state-leading 12-0.

Speaking of heating up: Logan DeRock

The Roosevelt senior went big this weekend, nabbing two personal bests along with two state-leading marks. DeRock went 134-1 in the discus, and 41-10 in the shot.

For the boy's keep an eye on Harrison's Tyrese VanHorne - he's two-for-two for sub 50 clockings. The senior reset the bar to 49.18 this past weekend, proving that he's just warming up.

And speaking of resetting the bar, Connor Ohlson just chipped nearly four seconds off his 800 season best. The Dakota Ridge junior dropped a 1:57.98 win at the Broomfield Shootout.

Meanwhile teammate Austin Vancil added the 3,200 to his Colorado No.1 marks. The senior ran his first 3,200 of the season at the Broomfield Shootout and came away with a 9:25 win.

Brighton's Cameron Harris opened his outdoor season with two jaw-dropping PRs. Harris hit the track for the first time since finishing second in the 60 Hurdles tat NBNI. The Brighton ran a state-leading and US No. 5 14.02 in the 110 hurdles.

Moving up to the 300 hurdles Dillon Andrews was the first to crack 39 seconds in the event this season. Cherokee Trail senior ran 38.79 at the Broomfield Shootout.

Donte Marsh just jumped his way into the conversation for best in the state in high jump. The Doherty junior added three inches to his PR with a big 6-8 win at the Palmer Terror Invitational.

In the throws Samuel Dirkes has reclaimed Colorado No. 1 marks in both the discus and the shot. The Silver Creek senior had a big weekend, going 185-1 in the discus, and 57-3 in the shot.
