Colorado Rankings: Sparks Fly!

Kara Lucyk moved up to No. 4 in the 100 hurdles all-classification rankings.

I've still got the fireworks from the weekend resonating in my ears, or maybe I'm just getting sick...

We're officially (less than) four weeks out from the 2019 state championships, and it's clear that everyone is rounding into peak shape. Not only did we see a handful of new state-leading marks this weekend, but we saw the fastest 3,200 ever run in Colorado, and the state's first Sub-9, unofficially.

Cole Sprout's 8:57.15 at the Dakota Ridge Invite tops the list as biggest firework in the sky from the weekend. Adding to the feat was the fact that Austin Vancil ran 9:08.18 in a race that produced six of the top 10 times in all-classifications.

FLASH!

Zion Gordon turned heads at the Douglas County Huskie Invite. The Regis senior dropped a state-leading 13.77 in the 110 hurdles - and No. 2 time in the country. That's the lone Sub-14 from a Colorado hurdler so far this season.

And speaking of races that produced the best we've seen yet: the 800.

David Cardenas beat out a star-studded field at the Dakota Ridge Invite that included Sprout and Connor Ohlson to run a state-leading 1:53.39. Ohlson ran 1:53.84 just ahead of Sprout's 1:53.87. These are the top-three times in the state so far, and they were run in the same race.

Tyrese VanHorne remains on top of the 400 thrown, though now he's got a little more of a gap on his chasers. VanHorne cracked 48 for the first time this season at the Dakota Ridge Invite, winning the race in a state-leading 47.58.

For the girl's Taylor James was the first to crack 5 in the 1,600 in Colorado this season. James ran 4:59.35 at the Boulder County Championships, which just a foot or two ahead of Quinn McConnell's 5:00.42.

Abby Glynn maintained her position on top of the 300 hurdle thrown. Glynn ran 44.11 FTW for the Boulder County title over Tara Hitchcock, who ran 44.63 for a Colorado No.3.

We've got a new leader in the shot put, and that's Katie Dack-Howell. The Lutheran sophomore had a big day at the Les Schwab R2J Invite. Dack-Howell tallied to PRs, one of which was a state-leading 42-2 in the shot.
