Remington Ross continued her dominance over the class with big wins the 100 and 200. The Highland junior torched the field in the 100, running 11.84, and duplicated the feat in the 200, running 24.77.
As what seemed to be a trend among seniors this past weekend, those competing in their final state meet saved their best performances for last, as was the case with Kaiya Firor.
Firor cleared the competition in the 400, running a 55.7 while Monika Williams took the runner-up spot in 57.61.
Firor wasn't done there, but we'll come back to that...
In the 800 Hannah Wilkie was the winner in a tight finish over Williams, who took yet another runner-up finish. Wilkie ran 2:19, while Williams was just a step back in 2:20.
In the distance events Chloe Veilleux reigned supreme.
The Soroco senior capped her high school career with dominating wins in both events, winning the 1,600 in 5:17, and the 3200 in 11:45.
The future looks bright in the 3,200, however, as freshmen Quin Gregg and Audrey Maroney finished second and third.
In the hurdles Firor brought the fire.
The Hotchkiss senior swept the hurdles, once again winning a tight race over Williams. Firor won the 100H in 15.56, while Williams was the runner-up in 15.60, and Firor claimed her third state title of the weekend by once again crossing the finish line first in the 300H, running a state meet record of 44.06, while Williams claimed her fourth runner-up finish in 45.03.
Likewise, the high jump was a hotly contested competition, with Kora Rich and Chasey Blach both clearing 5-3, while Remington Ross added the long jump state title to her resume by leaping 17-11.5
In the triple jump Hayden freshman Alison Rajzer proved she'll be a force in years to come. Rajzer won the event by over a feet, leaping 35-09.25.
Logan Kuskie and Abigail Shay took the pole vault competition new heights that saw the two separated by three inches. Kuskie captured the state title with a 10-10 vault, while Shay took the runner-up spot in 10-7.
The discus was another competition that saw the top of the podium separated by not much. Morgan Smith and Correy Koellner both went over 120 feet, with Smith claiming the state title with a toss of 123-0, while Koellner was less than two feet back in 121-5.
Emali Torres was a clear winner in the shot, as she was the only one over 37 feet. The Holyoke sophomore went 37-6 FTW. Sabrina Leighton took the runner-up spot just under 37 feet, throwing 36-11.
In the relays Meeker took the 4x1 title, while Yuma edged out Holyoke by .02 in the 4x2. Hotchkiss was the runaway winner in the Sprint Medley with Firor on the anchor. The won the event by four seconds, while Limon cleared the field in the 4x4, winning in 4:08. Lyons dominated the competition in the 4x8, running away in 10:03 - a 10 second victory.
Claiming the overall team competition was Highland, who tallied a clean 100 points. Lyons edged out Holyoke to claim the runner-up spot with 68 points, while Holyoke was just two points back with 66.
