Senior Swan Song: Pomona Throwers


Four Pomona seniors opted to collectively send in their Senior Swan Song!

Name: Garrett Bishop

Q) What was your most memorable race/throw/jump/vault/moment?

My most memorable throw was junior year at a Broomfield track meet where I threw a 49' 6" and hit a new personal record. I was happy, but mad at the same time because I was so close to 50'.

Q) Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

My biggest competition over my three years throwing would be my teammates, valor, and Pine Creek.

Q) What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment was taking 9th in state for shot put.

Q) If you could do it all over again what would you change about your career in high school?

I would have came out to throw freshman year instead of doing nothing.

Q) What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Learning the techniques of throwing shot and disc.

Q) What will you miss the most?

Competing and spending time with my friends.

Q) What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

I would like to thank all my coaches for introducing me to throwing and how much fun it can be.

Q) What advice would you give to younger athletes?

Try every event that you can, you don't always know what you'll be good at.

Q) What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

Coach Donnel was the first person to introduce me to throwing and how exciting it can be. I was lucky to have such a knowledgeable coach who could bring out my full potential. He was all around a great role model, and I never got tired of being around him.

Q) What are your college plans?

I will be attending New Mexico State University to play football.

Q) What was your most memorable race/throw/jump/vault/moment?

When I threw a 48.8 in state , after coming back from a traumatic ankle injury. 

Q) Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

My three friends, Garrett, Adam , and Sanjay ( All D1 athletes ). As well as myself

Q) What was your greatest accomplishment?

Winning a state championship in football, and placing in state for track.

Q) If you could do it all over again what would you change about your career in high school?

Nothing, I loved every journey associated with these 4 years. (Other than this corona)

Q) What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Broke my ankle , junior year. 3 screws and a plate put in.

Q) What will you miss the most?

The connection with my friends and coaches.

Q) What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

He's pushed me to be a great citizen and has taken me underneath his wing and pushed me to my limits.

Q) What are your college plans?

Full ride scholarship to Central Michigan University for football

Q) Who would you like to say 'thank you' to?

My parents , coaches , and close friends.Would love to make up my track season somehow.

Q) What was your most memorable race/throw/jump/vault/moment?

My most memorable throw was at league my junior year in the shot put and it was my last meet before back surgery and on my last throw I threw my person best and broke 50 feet.

Q) Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

My biggest competition would probably be my teammates because we all compete against each other everyday.

Q) What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment was in San Diego and I threw my discus PR. It ended up winning 1st and setting the meet record.

Q) If you could do it all over again what would you change about your career in high school?

I would take advantage of more opportunities that high school had to offer.

Q) What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Waiting to be cleared after back surgery was the hardest thing I had to overcome.

Q) What will you miss the most?

I will miss my friends the most.

Q) What advice would you give to younger athletes?

I would tell younger athletes to make every practice and every workout worth it.

Q) What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

My coach is the reason that I joined track in the first place so on top of teaching me everything I know about track he also got me started in the sport.

Q) What are your college plans?

For college I will be attending the United States Air Force Academy.

Q) Who would you like to say 'thank you' to?

I would like to say thank you to my family, friends, and coaches.

Q) What was your most memorable race/throw/jump/vault/moment?

My most memorable throw came junior year, I'm not sure which meet but it was discuss and I was really nervous before because I was pretty new to it and my coach calmed me down and I went into throw and PR'd by 10 feet and it was just so relieving.

Q) Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

Our biggest competition over the years were each other we always made it a competition everyday in practice and in meets but we were still very supportive of each other.  

Q) If you could do it all over again what would you change about your career in high school?

If I could do it over again I would just do any thing I could to prevent my wrist injury.

Q) What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

My wrist was my biggest obstacle during the season it didn't ever allow me to reach my best throw.

Q) What will you miss the most?

I'll miss hang long out with all my friends at the meets and just messing around doing our own thing and not caring what everyone thought of us because we were different.

Q) What advice would you give to younger athletes?

If I had to give as itI younger kids I'd say commit to what your doing and practice as much as you can and also find people that will make you better and put them around you.

Q) What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

My coach made me love throwing, at first I was not very sure I was gong to stick with it and he told me I have a real shot so I stayed and did everything I could to perfect it and I'm going to do that with everything in life now.

Q) What are your college plans?

I'm going to CSU to play football and I'll be majoring in business.

Q) Who would you like to say 'thank you' to?

I'd like to say thank you to all of the coaching staff, everyone in Jeffco, and thank you to all my teammates.

Pomona's 2020 throwing team would have been the best Colorado has ever seen without a doubt.
