Colorado State Preview: Athletes To Watch In All Classes

3A

On paper there doesn't look like any one favorite in the distance events. There's Jaycee Williams in the 800, Isabel Allori in the 1,600, and Allison Pippert in the 3,200. And then there's defending 1,600 state champ Katelyn Maley.

Perhaps the story here is that there's no favorite, and that it's all up for grabs.

On the opposite side of the spectrum: Peyton Garrison

The Coal Ridge senior looks to be in prime position to sweep the sprints, as she's coming off state-leading marks of 12.09 in the 100, 25.17 in the 200, and 56.16 in the 400. Add that she is the defending state champion in all three events. If there's anyone who can give Garrison a run, it's Katie Wrona - she's run 57.62 in the lone 400 she's run this year.

In the field spectators won't want to miss the pole vault - defending state champ Anna Willis has cleared 13-0 twice already this season, with a best of 13-2.

Likewise, Alexandria Twice will look to dominate the shot put - she holds a nearly five-foot season best over the 3A field.

On the boy's side of the competition we've got some heavy-hitting sprints on tap...

Platte Valley's Devyn Lauer-Duarte heads to Jeffco as the top-returner in the 100 and the 200, having finished second in the 100 last year, and claiming the 200 state title. Though he'll have competition in the form of Holy Family's Grayson Arnold. Arnold is also the favorite in the 400.

Like the girl's distance events, the boys side looks wide open for a new star.

And if the season has showed us anything, it's that Resurrection Christian freshman Jackson Fagerlin is the real deal - he's the top seed in the 1,600 with a 4:26 clocking.

A freshmen boy winning a state title is a rarity, however, but Fagerlin could be the kind of rarity to break that theme.

Every distance race appears tight, so it'll come down to whoever shows up on the day.

In the field events you'll definitely want to keep an eye on the high jump - Woodland Park's Sonny Ciccarelli isn't just No. 1 in 3A - he's tied for No. 1 in all-classifications with his 6-10 clearance.

The long jump looks to be an insanely competitive event - Jordan Wenger leads the charge with a 22-5 season best, and he's joined by Evan Atkin who has also gone over 22-feet outdoors. Of additional note, Chrisly Kelly-Cannon leapt 24-0 indoors several months ago.
